I've been reading HD.org for a while and have begun a build. I'm opinionated and weird, so I had to make my build unique. I'm looking for thoughts, opinions, and possible holes in my theories that might screw me down the road. Here's my idea... I have a stainless 32qt stock pot with lid, a Klean Kanteen water bottle, and a variety of caps for it. My idea is to cut the bottom off my Klean Kanteen and weld it to the lid of the pot, over a hole I'll bore to fit. KK has a variety of caps, including all stainless, and I've already bored a hole in one and brazed a piece of 3/8 copper tube into it. My hope is that I can use the stock pot, with varying caps, for all phases of the process.
For making the beer I would use the pot to boil the water, mix ingredients, and cook as one would with a normal pot. To maintain "lid integrity" I would use an unchanged all stainless KK cap with an OEM silicone gasket. Once the beer has cooled I plan on changing the stainless cap for a plastic, bpa free "sport cap" adapted to act as an airlock. In order to make sure the lid was air tight around the edges and not just the cap, Saran Wrap would be pressed into service. For the spirits run, the afore mentioned stainless cap with copper tube would be connected to a Liebig with a paste seal, and the pot lid proper would be secured with a PTFE/cardboard wrap gasket until I can source EPTFE material in my area. The standard issue KK silicone gasket would be replaced with PTFE tape for the run since I don't know the effect of hot, high-proof alcohol on silicone. So tell me; am I complete fool or just over-ambitious?
I've already constructed the airlock for the KK sport cap, a 30"x1/2"x1" Liebig (not as long as I would have liked, but nothing has been soldered yet, so it may get longer), the cardboard/PTFE wrap gasket, and of course brazed a piece of 3/8 tube to a bored out stainless cap. The nice things is that even if one stage of my plan is faulty, it's pretty easy to improvise, adapt and overcome the difficulty. Thoughts, opinions and criticisms are welcome but if you're gonna tell me I'm an idiot at least tell me why you think so. Thanks.
Howdy. I'm new here...
