Best recipe for single run on a pot still

Hi all,
I've done a few runs on my 3 gallon pot still. Some good, some not so much. The not so great stuff is sub par I think because of bad cuts so I'm going to do a spirit run with it.
Here's my question: do you have a favorite recipe for single runs on a pot still?
I have ujssm gen 2 fermenting now. Anything else I should try???
Thanks
Fin

Rum turns out nice with a single run. Why are you averse to doing a second run? Really cleans things up nice.

There are a couple of people here who can turn a good spirit with a single run on a pot still but I think you will find the majority run double at least to clean up the profile. Have you mastered a fine drink double distilling yet? Once you do refine the ferment you are using for that and you will have it.
By the way, the best recipe can sometimes be "time". I have had neutrals that I thought were too hot or whiskey that was too tailsy. I let them sit a few months and Tada! Good drink. It's a must do for rum.

Try keep your wash % low too, makes for a nicer end product.

For single runs, you might also think about adding a thumper to your rig. It will boost your ABV by at least a few percentage points and with a water or feints charge, it will also help to clean up your product a bit.

Ha! That's cheating. It makes it a 1.5 run not a single!

No, don't have one.
Use a fermenter sized to ferment at least three or four still charges. Do the strips and then a spirit run. With a small still, that is the easiest way to build up enough quality stock so that you're not sucking on the spout and can have some put aside for aging.

+1. Love the shredded wheat! Have you tried Cheerios yet Jed?

In my opinion, stripping and spirit runs are better than a single run.
If I'm thirsty, I'll steal some of the hearts from a strip for drinking as is.

A single run with a thumper for whiskey or rums will work, but a clean ferment of no more than 8% ABV is vital since you're not cleaning it up a lot.

Although some recipes may be better suited than others, how you run your still is also very important. When doing a single run bourbon, I run my pot still just a little faster than I would a.spirit run. Cut are also important, and for a single run I tend to keep less than I would on a spirit run. Special attention to fermentation protocols is also very important.

when i first started i worked though the the different ways of running. at this point its , i strip enough for a full boiler charge of low wines. its to simple. even though im running a 5 gallon pot. honestly though it takes about 60lbs ( or so) of grains to get enough low wines to do a spirit run.
this i very much like the 3 page thread in the same novice section.

I used to do single runs of UJSSM, would spend a couple of days or more letting the wash clear, but the product would still end up tasting yeasty!
![Eh :eh:](./images/smilies/icon_eh.gif)
Doing strip and spirit runs I can start as soon as the ferment is done and no yeast taste or other funk, and the process is actually faster!

With a drain and fill port on your boiler, you can easily knock out 3 or 4 stripping runs in one stilling session. I'm running on low power (1375W) and it takes me from around 9:00am to 5:00pm for 3 strips- setup to cleanup. So, I usually do the strips one day and the spirit run the next. If I were running 240V, I could probably knock it all out in one day.

Yeah, I get the stripping and spirits run process and I'm in the process of up sizing everything to accommodate that. I don't have a problem with doing it, I was just wondering if anyone had a good recipie for single runs is all. Maybe that's a unicorn. I like full flavoured spirits over neutrals. I'll keep looking - no need to further the debate on spirit runs. I do appreciate that fermenting is the key to quality single runs. That's a point I hadn't thought of....

Rad's All bran recipe was what I started out with, even when I used an Airstill (Don't judge me!) it turned out pretty decent...

You are one of the few I was referring too that can get a good single run. I've heard you talk about it before. I need lots more practice before I can get there myself. But there's the goal now isn't it?

I just ran off a batch of first gen UJSSM and it was indeed pretty good. We are getting better at cuts. I have a batch of second gen waiting to run too I will keep you posted. I ran some apple brandy that had a good flavour and was very smooth.

Froot Loops are quite good run once. I'm afraid you would lose the subtle essence of the Froot if it was double distilled.

I just finished a spiritrun a few minutes ago.
Recipe was basical a all bran.(put some müsli in also)
As i ran the strippingrun, i could have drawn of 1 L of quite pleasent spirit, but i decided to run the way i always do.
Two or three strippingruns and then one spiritrun.
Had only a half charge today (10 L), took me two hours from flicking the switch to turn off the pump.
Result: 30 Ml foreshots (had thrown 60 ML on the strippingrun), 0,4 L heads, 3.4 L hearts that needs to be dilluted and 0,7 l bitter tails.
Tomorrow i will be cutting them to 40% ABV...think it will give me around 4+ L of very pleasent spirit.

Honestly, no matter how carefully you single run it, there's no way you're not getting a lot of heads smeared into the product!
![Problem :problem:](./images/smilies/icon_problem.gif)
Try a double next time and you'll see!

There is simply nothing under the sun that is better single pot-still run than double.
I read a lot of posts about single runs. They are almost exclusively written by sugar fermenters, because they are getting an acceptable (to them) %abv from one run of a high abv ferment.
Nothing against sugar-heads personally (except I don't like the taste or style
![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)
), but even a sugar-head would be so much better run twice.
