Try'n to quit the dip...

Post by NcGunny »

25+ years of snuff and I decided to try and quit. Been 2 days and I might be having a breakdown..lol
Headache, shakey hands, irratated beyond belief,I even have these lil shocks occassionaly in my forehead. I have washed the vehicles, mowed the yard..then remowed it in a opposite direction, did laundry, bathed the cat. Wife gets back and has a roll of chew she throws at me..lmao. I cant imagine what drug withdrawl must be like for some people.
Is your life worth.."Better fix that next time"????

Good luck! I quit cigarettes about 11 years ago and it was tough. They still smell good from time to time.

Started smoking cigars at a very young age. That developed into the consumption of all things tobacco, including chewing tobacco. I quit all that when the kids came about, but picked up the occasional cigar habit again.

Damn hard stuff to quit. Make a regular man act like a grizzly bear.

From my experience most drug withdraw is a walk in the park compared to cigs. I'm drug free now days, and i have a CIG in my hand right now. I have friends that went waaaay further down the drug path than I ever did. They say the same thing. Good luck my friend. I trully wish you the best.
But what the heck do I know.....I am still learning.

I quit smoking cigarettes after 50 yrs about 2 mnths ago and started vaping. Already down from 18 mg of nicotine to 6. Notice the difference in lung function after only a few days. A very easy way to quit as I have tried different ways many times

Chantix is the way to go. Very vivid and out there dreams. Crap I couldn't otherwise dream up to go to the bench with! Thankfully no "dirty"dreams or I would probably be divorced for suggestion! Not so hard to quit but very difficult to smoke just a few while drinking on a weekend and then remain clean without buying another pack.

As a neck cancer survivor, (surgery, radiation, chemo, etc.) I used to chew and smoke cigarettes. After that experience, one I that wouldn't wish on my worst enemy, I went from 260 lbs. down to 180 lbs. (and looked like an Auschwitz survivor.) I quit all of it for several years. Now I allow myself the occasional good cigar, but the chew and cigs are totally out. Believe me. you don't want to go through that treatment.

I quit 30+ years ago. Went to a smoking aversion clinic at a hospital - a group of about 20 people. The clinic relied heavily on negative reinforcement. For several weeks I carried around a Mason jar containing cigarette butts and a little water to make it look nasty. It had a picture taped to it of this dude from back in the 1920's who had his lower jaw and throat removed. To this day, I can't drink likker from a Mason jar.

I was a very heavy duty cranker for many many years. ALL attempts at quitting failed splendidly until I looked at myself in the mirror one morning and didn't like what I saw.

Didn't get any better lookin' but I've been clean for 26 years.

No secrets here, folks.

If I could go back in time and change one thing it would be my bacca habit. My first little league baseball game I was in right field with a cheekful of Levi Garret. 29 years later still ribbon Copenhagen. Quit a couple times but always end up getting another can of cranky reliever.

I quit smoking in 01 after smoking pack a day for ten years or so. I had gotten a drillig job in the oil field and couldn't smoke on the rig, so I just quit. Wasn't too bad, but I was dipping too, and that helped keep me from smoking. I quit dipping in 04, and that sucked real bad. I took an empty plastic snuff can and I would fill it up every morning with coffee grounds from the coffee filter. I also kept some tea bags in my truck. I'd use those as a crutch to help me not dip. The nicotine withdrawals weren't as tough to me as just not having something in my lip at certain times. For years, even when I was smoking, I got a dip as soon as I got through brushing my teeth in the morning. I got one as soon as I got through eating any meal. Not getting that dip was harder on me than the withdrawals. I haven't had one in eleven years. I haven't wanted one in five or six.

Gunny I can't remember if your fully retired or not but you can (or at least could when I was there) pick up nicotine patches (and even chantix if you want) from the va. I had great luck with those and an all mint dip (no nicotine). Doesn't taste like cope but it gave me something to do. Stick with it, it's not worth going back.

I've quit a few times, for years. I'm back down to a pack a day now. I find a nice 13 mile run every morning does the trick for a few hours.

You've got to look it like this, one day you will quit, it will be on your own or in a hospital bed so how do you want to get it done?

I am pushing 40, and was kinda shocked recently to find out so many of my friends still dip. I used to chew Levi Garrett and sometimes dip Copenhagen when I was young but stopped when I noticed my left cheek is half the thickness of my right.. Can't imagine what it would be like by now. I still absolutely love the smell of Levi but haven't touched that stuff in nearly two decades.

Some of the physical habits are as hard to shake as the nicotine habit. I would reach for my shirt pocket for a couple of years after I quit smoking. And, for a few years after I quit there were the physical triggers that would bring on the urge to smoke - after a meal or cup of coffee, waking up in the morning, drinking beer or likker, sitting on the toilet, etc. And, there's a certain pleasure to it until you do it so much that the thoughts of death creep in. The addiction is a monster and it demands your attention above everything else in your life.

Went out and bought a vape yesterday. Had tried e-cigs years ago, but they were new and crappy. Took a bit o getting used to but I haven't touched a smoke or dip since and no craving. Picked up eVic VT. Nice and adjustable makes it easy. In the past i , also tried zyban (worked first time, but I started again on Drunken night many months down the road, tried to again and smoked more).

DO NOT PUT IT IN YOUR FRONT POCKET! A friend of mine had his explode and burn him 2nd and 3rd degree burns from hip to knee and near 3/4 round his thigh! Put him out of work for weeks. Be careful.

I finally quit. Chewed in junior high school, then high school, then the military, then when I got out... It was tough, man. I got headaches, shaky hands and the irritability everybody mentioned. It took about a month for the headaches to go away. My wife told me to go buy more so I wouldn't be such an as*hol* but I didn't want to prolong the headaches so I gutted it out. I cheated last year when I went out of town on a business trip for a few days. The headaches came back for about 2 days and I haven't cheated since. If you fall off the wagon, just remember to get back on it as soon as possible. You can do it. There's a website you can go to for support: http://www.killthecan.org" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow. It was pretty helpful to get the motivation started. Best of luck to you!

went to the dentist today. New guy. Get put to sleep to fix some stuff, I hate needles. DR tells the wife I have to go to a different Dr tomorrow morning. He thinks I have cancer. Still dont want to quit. Wife is flipping out. I know I should but I am damn stubborn. And I honestly like it. More then once the DR has said this looks funny, more than once I have proven him wrong. We all have our day to go to Valhalla, its in the stars. When mine comes I will go with my brothers, not on the terms of some Dr.

never dipped after swallerin some juice at the age of 12.
smoked cigs from the age of 5 to age of 27 pretty regular like, then slowed down to about 10 sticks a day until early 40's.
hardest thing i ever stopped.
can't breathe worth shit and scared to death of cancer...but the damage is done now.
started rolling cigars just to see if i could, and puffed on a couple for testing purposes...but apparently i have no real interest in smoking them anymore, just making them. absolutely love the smell (when they are not burning) and once i've rolled my way through the 10 lbs or so, i believe i will be done with that hobby. probably make some friends with folks that do smoke cigars though.
I finally quit drinking for good.

now i drink for evil.

Key is to keep quitting til you get there, I quit smoking in 04, dipped for six months to get the cigarette out of my hand. Then quit the dip. The cravings slowly get farther and farther apart, hourly then daily then weekly then mothly until there is no more. For me it was about the 6-8 month mark. You'll be surprised how nasty smoking and dipping is once you quit. I can smell a cigarette a mile away and it smells nasty. Good luck, you'll be happy you did one day!

When I quit smoking 30+ years ago, I battled the urge for a few years. It seemed to take a couple of weeks of withdrawal to get past the nicotine addiction, but the psychological addition (the habit) can stay with you for a good long time. The urges were difficult, but I found that if I just struggled through them, they didn't last long and I could go about my business and feel better about myself for winning that one little battle with the demon. I should also say that I quit many times before I was successful.

For those reading this and thinking about quitting whatever addiction you may have, don't get discouraged. It may not happen the first time and you shouldn't beat yourself down about it. Just like in this hobby, we grow and learn from failure and only succeed by having first failed. Don't give up - I hate fuckin' quitters.
