might be a silly question and if so, flame on... i just cant find any info apart from beer brewing forums and i'm not sure if that can be related directly.

how do you accurately measure ABV of turbo washes with all the carbon affecting the readings?

does the OG and FG method work?
i.e.
(OG - FG) x 131 = ABV

would straining thru a coffee filter help/hinder or not matter?

can i just use the spirit hydrometer? is that accurate with all the dense particles floating about in the wash?

The formula works the same way. After all, at this stage you are just making beer or wine, aka wash. Let it finish below 1.000 if it will and let the floating material settle. Too much solids can interfere with the hydrometer reading.

Filtering a sample won't hurt.

The abv will be too low to get a reading with a spirit hydrometer.

yeh i siphon the wash after running a clearing agent thru so the boiler gets the cleanest possible wash.

Not all Turbos use carbon.

the turbo sugar i have used on my first 2 washes has lumps of carbon in it
the SS triple distilled yeast has liquid activated carbon also, which is what i used for my 2nd wash and the wash is a very dark grey colour.

i'm not doing anymore turbos after this one anyways... will do a birdwatchers and then progress onto UJSM when i can get the proper receptacle for aging it.

all this carbon cant be healthy lol

I have tried the triple distilled, and it works fine. But the big problem with that ultra-fine carbon is that it is a pain to filter out. Plus the cost of the turbo in the first place is too high.
