Beverly Hillbillys Granny Clampitt's ""rheumatiz medicine"

Post by texastwist »

Okay it's a odd ball question but, "Is there an actual recipe for Granny Clamitt's rheumatiz medicine ?" although she was a complete fictional character. I'm not interested in trying to use any oppossum hide or rotting horse fat I still have a WalMart available and know for certain there is not any opposum in the frozen meat section. (I looked)- I do like the redundant questions they entertain me.

Yes...there was a show where she went through the entire process and they had a ho down at the end.

She admitted her whiskey wouldn't cure rheumatism, but "it'll make ya happy ya got it!" Two sips was enough for whatever ailed ya.

This seems to back granny Clampitt:
Alcohol and arthritis link examined
When they compared the risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis by looking at the alcohol consumption in the control group and rheumatoid arthritis group, non-regular drinkers had a higher risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis compared with regular drinkers (Odds ratio [OR] 2.31, 95% confidence interval CI, 1.73 to 3.07). They also found that, compared with the most frequent drinkers, never-drinkers had an increased risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis (OR 4.17, 95% CI 3.01 to 5.77).
In true hillbilly style, I think any old drink will do but if it tastes good, it's more better.

The still is in series 1, episode 4. The worm ain't never gonna make anything except a bomb. In the London episode, you'll see the jug. She calls it Tennessee Tranquilizer. Other episodes call it different names.

My guess is that, if you wanted to make your own version of it, un-aged, uncut, single pass, UJSSM White Lightning would be closer to Granny's recipe than anything the script writers would have come up with.

Granny Made Tennessee moonshine as she was from Tennessee, here is where the Beverly Hillbillies are from

Jed and Elly Clampett lived close to Bug Tussle and Silver Dollar City near Branson, Mo. Granny who was Jeds mother in-law, moved from Tennessee to live with Jed and Elly. Pearl and Jethro Bodine lived a short distance from the Clampetts in Arkansas. The old truck sits in a museum at Point Lookout, Mo. just south of Branson. Various towns and locations in both the Missouri and Arkansas Ozarks are mentioned in many episodes.

No recipe here, but it had something to do with... corn!

I swear that still looks exactly like the one they used in the Andy Griffin show in a few episodes. Gotta love Hollywood..

Freezing possum ruins the texture, look in the fresh organic section. It's best road tenderized BTW you have to spit out the gravel though.

I found that’s true but it’s better ‘n the tar flavors ya pick up on asphalt. Now, i fondly remember fresh, road tenderized anaconda from Florida but that’s a story for the bench.

Not to derail the thread, but they only made it legal to harvest road kill here about 3 years ago or so. Haven't hit a deer since.

It might be sad to admit this, but I've eaten possum twice in my life to be nice to my grandma. After she passed, I told my Dad never again.
