Barrel aging flavor progression

So I have switched from mini 1 gallon barrels up to the black swan 8 gallon. They've been used once by a local bourbon distillery. I barreled a wheated whiskey in March, and it's smoothing out fantastically. I am quite happy, but I'm wondering how the flavor changes as the aging process continues. Currently it's gotten really sweet, the color is just right... It's still tastes very immature and almost maple syrupy. Will this mellow with time? I'm wondering if I should pull it out or keep it in and let it continue to age
