Does anyone know how to rum cure tobacco? I am thinking about growing tobacco and hand rolling my own cigars, for my own use. The downside is that the "ususal" curing techniques are time and space consuming.

I have heard of rum curing, but can not find any info on how to do it.

im guessing here but i would think either spray the leaves as they dry;space consuming,or dip the rolled cigars; like the way they do them illegal ones.

My guess was to dip the leaves periodically in rum as the leaves cure, or maybe after they cure. I figured dipping the rolled cigar into the rum would cause the tobacco to swell and ruin the cigar. Sprayin it on them might work better, not sure.

I grew some tobacco a while ago but could never figure out how to dry/cure the leaves with out them drying out too much and crumbling.

He's using 5 litres of water a day for 4 weeks, plus running his souped up radiator for all that time

I haven't grown my own baccy for ten or fifteen years..but we used to hang the bunchs on dowels in the kitchen near the stove.
Took a week or two to dry to crumbly, but you could stop it a shreddy a day or two early.

example here you can expect to paid 50-75$ for 200 cigarettes,
cigars arnt cheap either huge taxes on tobacco.

you shootin for wrapers. gold leaf is beter than burley. just spray it
with your likker mix after it ben cured back up to where you can roll
an wont fall apart. higher up the stalk you go the beter the bacca.
cant get no money for lugs so mite find a field an they give em to you
if you prime em. use to make plugs like ole black miriah with syrup
or honey with burley. use to crumble fig leafs with bacca cause it was
so strong an im rekonin most everybody round here smoked rabit bacca

That could do the trick, thanks! In fact I could make a smoke house that also could be used as a curing box - get twice the mileage. I used to smoke hams in an old refrigerator that I made into a smoke house, many a decade ago. With a couple of modifications I think I could make a dual purpose system.

Probably at first, but I betcha I could hand cultivate some great tobacco with practice, and learn to roll a decent cigar.

I can just see me kicked back on the porch, smoking a cigar that I grew and rolled myself - cured in rum, while picking my banjo and sipping on the 500th generation of UJSM.

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking that I might raise two varieties, one for filler and one for the wrappers. If you think gold leaf for the wrappers, what do you think is best for the filler? As for lugs, there isn't a tobacco farm in this state that I am aware of, unfortunately.

people grow and cure their own tobacco, that's a kick in the pants but I suppose I shouldn't be surprised.

Back when I smoked folks would tell me that I couldn't smell and taste things... I told 'em they were crazy. I could smell and taste everythin' just fine, thankyou. Boy was I wrong.

Want to make better booze? Quit smokin'... cuts will become so obvious that you'll wonder how in the world ya ever had a problem with cuts before.

Definately not against home grown, as i said, i've grown it myself. Just the drying method he has suggested seems very costly to run

Tobacco should not to be trifled with by youngsters. It is best left to us old timers who have gained enough sense to know when the jones is trying to get you, and to push it back.

I enjoy a good cigar every once in awhile, probably about 1 per month on average, although I think I could handle one per day without getting addicted, I would like to raise and roll my own cigars. There is a deep satisfaction in enjoying something of quality that was home made.

I have to say though that if I was addicted to tobacco, raising my own would surely be attractive from an economic point. Last time I looked I think cigarettes were up to $5 per pack a nd there was talk lately of another $1 per pack tax being added. I suspect that home raised and rolled cigarettes would be about 25 cents per pack, and that would mostly be the cost of the papers....

Whoa! That works out to about $10 or $11 USD?

I picked up the cigarette habit in the Army. I quit shortly after I got out of the Army and cigarettes went up to 40 cents per pack - I figured that was ridiculously high to pay for poor health.

At $10 per pack I sure would be growing my own. Probably get way better cigarettes that way too.

Edit: Per the internet each tobacco plant will provide 125 cigarettes. If you average 20 per day, then each plant would last you about 6 days - so to be safe say 60 plants. They should be spaced two feet apart, so a square garden of about 20 x 20 feet should do the trick with room for some tomatoes. Seed cost is negligble, watering and curing would have some cost too - but compared to ($5 per pack x 7 x 52) $1,820 I bet it would seriously pay back.

Illegal tobacco, called 'chop-chop' here, is huge business in Ozland.

I stopped smoking on 8 November 2007 after fifty six years. I began at twelve and am really not sure why I stopped such an enjoyable habit.
I do believe that I feel a little 'better' for it, but I sure don't know if I can stay off the bastards, however every day gets 'easier' I spose.

Keep it up BD, about two years ago i smoked my last White Ox, after 3 fifty gram packs of the strongest tobacco i could find a week, it's the best thing i've ever done.

Hang tight blanikdog I smoked for 33 years 4 packs a day for 22 of them .Aint touched one in 6 years.Cant say I dont miss them cause I still do every once in a while.But I sure as hell miss all those marboro miles.

Hanging tough is the key. It doesn't really get easier day by day, but it does get easier month by month.

I smoked for 8 years when I quit, My Dad quit after having smoked for over 40 years, he just laid them down and never looked back.

ya i know i smoke $1.90us a pack here, crapped my pants when i spent $10 for a cheap pack in toronto....will carry extra on next weeks trip,
