I had idea do not know if would help or not or even possible
when someone joins they have to go through cooling off time
X amount of time before they can post Thought that keep people
from jumping on asking questions and disappearing

There are some sites that do that. Many I have seen force you to be "moderated" for a certain amount of time (say a month). That makes more work for moderators, since they have to OK, or kill posts for new users, but it does keep some of the junk out of the way.

I am not fully familiar with what phpBB can do. It may have this capability.

The problem I see with the suggested scenario is that some people may have already been lurkers for quite some time and only decide to register and post when they have a legitimate question which either hasn't been answered to their satisfaction or they just haven't been able to find the right post that gives them the answer... For those people it would become a hindrance, regardless of whether it is clearly stated in the forum guidelines or not... No matter what deterrent you try you will end up having people who would rather ask than use the search feature... I have the same problems in my software support forum and see it in every other forum I belong to... It's the nature of people to just ask rather than search, unfortunately...

I don't see it as being that much of a prob.

The weeds are sorted out fairly quickly here, i wish other forums had the admin and moderator strength, not to mention the freedom for members to police the site and focus it the way they want.

that's an interesting thought. especially coming from you dnderhead, considering you posted as a guest long before you even joined.

Furthermore, what's to stop a 'guest; from asking the n00b questions in lieu of a freshly register member? I don't think we'd want to get rid of the guest post ability.

it's not the questions that are the problem, those can be ignored. it's the misinformation and/or the repeating of other peoples answers without actually contributing fresh information or insight that is buggersome.

Agreed.

Can spoil a good thing.

Dunderhead:

By no means trying to single anyone out. I didn't even really realize that you'd been posting as a guest until after I posted. I just was pointing out the simple fact that it is very easy to bypass any cooldown period via the guest post feature.

would it be "easy" to limit guest and new members to posting in the Novice forum? I am on a couple other forums that have different levels of membership and you can only post in certain areas until you've been given permission to post everywhere.
