Finally Finished

Post by corene1 »

Wow! it has been a while but I have finally finished my column , boiler, and liebeg setup . All I need to do is build a stand so the weight is not on the burner stand itself as it is a tad over 20 gallons, and a collection stand to support the liebeg and have an area to set the collection jars. It is all stainless and can be ran as a simple pot still or create a column with 1 to 4 plated sections. It has a section on the bottom that I can add copper shards to so there will be plenty of copper contact as well as the plates and down comers being all copper. Or I can move that section to the top and use it as a flavoring basket, or pack it to add a packed section on top of the plates. I want to thank all of you for all the inspiration in building this column , especially Jimbo. He has been sending me gentle nudges via E-Mail to get this thing done. So I will plumb the cooling lines this weekend and start the cleaning process. Just to let you know it is perfectly straight but my camera for some reason makes everything look bent when viewed from top to bottom. This is the build thread if anyone is interested http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopi ... 50&t=49366

I finished making my stands today . One for the burner and one to help support the liebeg. The support stand for the liebeg is adjustable up and down to adjust for adding or subtracting plates and the collection plate is also adjustable to be able to adjust it up and down as well.

Good for you, about time you put your own build first.
First rate work indeed, let us know how she runs, or even better, have a head to head with Jimbo where the twins can compete !

An old fashioned still off. 4 hours. 15 gallons of low wines. Cuts made on the fly. :p

Nice Corene.

I hope your Liebig will keep pace with the flute though. With the large bore flute, its capable of a fast throughput. The lyne arm to 1/2" vapor takeoff line will be flowing very fast and that can reduce the efficiency of the product condenser.

I would think that a 2" vapor line coupled with a shotgun would better manage the still and flute's capability.

Proof positive, "Girls Rule, Guy's Drool". Sweet build Corene. BTW, thanx for sharing a pic a while back about your teflon covered copper washer, I went and copied you and made one for myself and couldn't be happier, sure beats the hell out of using flimsy cardboard for a base.

Looks great.

Are you going to build a stand of sorts to help cope with the PC extending out so far?

It will be interesting to see if it works as well as I am hoping., It is actually a 3/4 inch by 36 inch liebeg with a full length turbulator inside the copper and the 3/4 tube has a spiral wrap on the od before it was put into the 1.25 inch stainless housing.

I went and got all the parts for my coolant plumbing today and built some stands for the still and liebeg and posted the photos on the first post. Yes it looks straight now, I assembeled it with out gaskets in the first pictures and I think it swayed a bit. Also made all the gaskets and did a pressure test so she is all sealed and ready for the cleaning runs tomorrow.

HOT DAMN! Beautiful work Corene!

Swedish, sure, we could do the twins side by side. Her work gives me wood.... lol, that was a nod to your other thread happening at the moment..... And corene's fabrication genius too, of course.

Im running the flute at this moment, 2 plates of Corene's handy work and I pulled 5 quarts of keep at 82% ABV off the first 13g of my 38g 56lbs panela rum wash (9%). Im runnign hotter than usual on the element, and higher defleg water than usual (hot with lots of reflux) and I pulled 80% by volume keep out of this boiler batch. The flutes are definitely a magical mystery tour.

Thanks Shed. It was very interesting to me that running the boiler at max power, 5500W, I pulled the highest ABV run ever. Due the high reflux level. Its counter intuitive, and opposite of how a pot runs. But moral of this story is dont be afraid to throw the coals at it, and just adjust defleg water flow to compensate. I was running the same product flow rate as usual, just 5-7% ABV higher proof. I did it as an experiment cause Ive always kind of liked rum tails, very tasty, so I wasnt too worried about any smearing that might happen. But by the ABV you can see the opposite happened. Was a pleasant surprise. Ill try that approach on next whiskey run.

Corene, as Ive been telling you in the emails, youre gonna love learning this tool and be so happy you got her up and running!

Corene, if you try this hot and fast method, with lots of reflux water flow, note I have copper mesh rolled up and stuffed in each of the 5 defleg vapor path tubes. I dont think the defleg alone would knock it down without the mesh, running at this balls out heat (5500w). IN a normal whiskey run, the mesh is nice too because I need barely a trickle of defleg water. Let me know if you need any I have a roll of it. I use it in my leibig vapor path too, it lowers the amount of water flow needed dramatically.

Thanks , That is a very good idea. Never even thought of controlling the vapor speed through the Reflux condenser for more efficiency.
