copper worm size

Post by BUCKEYESHINER »

Being new to any type of distilling,i'm trying to make a 20 gallon stainless pot still with an 8 inch stainless thumper. I have 2 in copper( out of a 6 in. cap ) coming from my boiler, then too an 8 in X 24 in. stainless thumper. From there I have 2 in. copper running to my worm. so my question is ,what diameter and length worm should i use and how quick should i reduce it down too the worm.
Also, is copper mesh needed for the sulphides seeing how I have almost 10 ft. of 2 in. copper lines. If so where should i place it ? In the top of the boiler near the outlet, in the thumper or can it be put in the boiler.

Welcome to HD, to answer your question no copper mesh isn't required as long as you have copper somewhere in the vapor path. To answer your other questions I am a visual person and would like to see some pictures, I use a shotgun condenser and before that a libieg so not an expert on worm condensers.

Welcome to HD?
Hopefully you're utilizing the Parent site along with these forums.
Beins its 20 gal, you'd be ok with a 1/2"id or even a 3/4"id worm ...I'd say et least 25-30' of coil ..
The reducer can be rite after thumper, or rite before the worm.
If you're reducing at the lyne arm, lyne arm should be around 15-20" in length before reduction,
although I've seen some reduced rite from cap or elbow ...Personal preference I spect.
Hope I helped ...Get some pics in when possible. :D
No scrubbies needed, you've enough copper.

There is 4 ft. of 2 in. copper running to ( not in this pic. ) 12 in. diameter X 24 in. long thumper. Should be about a 10 gallon tank. All joints are ferruled for convenience

This is my 25 gallon boiler with a 6 in. diameter X 12 in.tall cap.I wanted to put a thermometer in the boiler somewhere. Not sure if to put it in the mash area of the tank or the outlet near the 2 in. copper. Ive heard different opions. Any imput would be great.

You sure that thumper is 10gals? Sure looks small. A thermometer in a pot still is not needed, but nice to have if you know how to use it. There's a thread in novices that is discussing that right now. Good luck, welcome and enjoy the forums!

Is there a link for this pic? I can't read it. lol I need new glasses. lol
or can someone summarize what it said?
It looks like it converts the sizes in to a proper set up?
If not is there a calculator to size out all the proper sizes of all the components?
Thanks
