Moonshine Season Officially Opens Today

Post by Appalachia-Shiner »

Today is March 1.
I declare the Moonshine Season officially open. After a long cold winter with a LOT of snow, I will be welcoming warmer weather. It was 70 degrees in Appalachia yesterday and still pretty warm today.
Mash is going to be working in a lot of pots soon, and the beautiful, tasty, white (clear) liquid will be aflowing.
I just acquired an additional SS Keg. A feller who deals in Junk had it sitting beside his house the other day....I stopped and asked what he wanted for it. He says: "What you want if for? A Gas Tank?" I replied it would make a fine gas tank. He said I could have it for free but I told him that I wouldn't feel right not paying him for it, so I gave his kid a $20 bill. I also got a big piece of that stuff that Ga. Flatwoods uses to strain his mash with....also for free. That's the black rolled up thing on top of the keg.(goes under concrete ground pads)
I have a bag of Producers Pride All Grain, a bag of winter wheat (to malt), a bag of WalMart Sugar for UJ, and some white oak that's sat out in the weather all winter to age it with. Oh Yeah, and the Corn....about 500# for Free also.
I have a Mash of malted corn and malted wheat aworking in the corner of the living room right now....house smells better than those Plug In fresheners too.

Yet one more reason to envy you, Googe! Steaming some kale a couple of days ago and thought I wonder? Grabbed a 4 liter jug and mixed up some "Goo". Tasted it while still still a bit sweet about two days in, pleasent, very neutral sugar wine, losing the green. I had just a sip but could not taste the kale at all, Would have made a great base for lemon aide. I might bottle a bit of it". Interesting, Googe, very interesting!

Appalachian-Shiner,
You must be way south of our parts of the mountains. I haven't seen an sign of spring but a big old buckeye breaking bud, it is coming! I for one would love the smell of your big bubbling air freshened!

Malting season is more weather dependent than moonshining.

I malt and run year round here. it's a little more work in the winter but it's for a good cause.

Meanwhile down in Texas...
The bluebonnets are blooming, snakes are crawling, and the ultimate sign its spring.... The turkey hens have scattered and are running alone getting ready to breed.

Sunshine and blue skies here in WV today at 65F. Snowing like hell when I got up to pee 2 hours ago. I'm truly mixed up.

Gonna dig out my 30 gallon blue barrel and the Star-San today for a SF ferment. Still a little chilly in my ferment room so I'll be using EC-1118 which is a first for me.
Blah, blah, blah,........

Beautiful 43° day here, watchin Popcorn Sutton and Raymond Fairchild on tv ...
Just had a steroid shot in the arse, 3 cortisone shots in my ankle joint (yes it was pretty painful), and sittn here resting ...Got my fermenters checked, one 1 racked in the pot, the rest in the carboy ...Got my backslop transferred and washed my 1 fermenter ..Washed my aquarium heater..Left other fermenter alone, although its one day from bein unplugged ..
Gonna rig up shortly and get the season goin, although my season is yr round ..Good thread, got me stoked.

Woke up, -36 with the windchill this morning. But the above zero side of the thermometer is predicted for the weekend.

I thought to myself:

And then i thought some more:

There is a glimmer of hope . . . although I had to work yesterday, it was 15C on the PLUS side of the thermometer. Spring break this week for me and the kids. Maybe get out and do a run if one day is nice enough and i'm not working. Got some booners to strip. Just something about running outside on flame over electric. Best part of summer . . . anytime i run, i fire up the bbq as well. Then the family sits outside to eat while i finish up my run. Great family time.

+1 Family 1st, hobbies 2nd, but when you can combine them life is good. Remember this as it won't last, but you are in the best time of your life. Wish I could go back 30 yrs, but life is still good (so to speak).
