4" glass bubble plate column

I'm just getting started on the copper for the plates. The end caps and glass is on order.
Here's the beginning of the 3 bubble plates. I'm too cheap to buy a piece of copper
So I'm making it out of scrap tubing.

"tubing annealed and smashed flat".... with an axe!
I like the looks of this already.

You are a building machine. Can't wait to see some progress.

Here's a poor mans way of making 3 round pieces of copper.
The only problem is, I don't know the exact OD the pieces need to be
I've ground them to 4-1/4"
figure I can grind them down a little more when the end-caps and glass comes in.

Now comes the big question
Should I make perforated Plates or bubble plates?
The column design I have in mind allows for changing the plates easily.
So all the options might get tried

I am partial to perf plates it is waht I started on with that said I have tried both in the same column same amount of plates the only difference I noticed was bubble caps can be run abit slower than the perf plates I had,and once again with that said,OD used less holes and had the same ability!

I'm not sure, but I figure a 4" perf plate running at it's best speed, is more efficient than the same size bubble cap plate.
And a bubble cap plate has a wider range of operation, if you want to run it slower and cleaner.

One big bubble cap plate, several little caps, a valved plate, a perf plate or an inch or two of packing over a screen?
So many options and so little time to play with them.

Looks good shady! I've been playing around with the bottom plate a bubble and the others perf, - still learning how to drive her.

I've been tinkering again today. Here's what I made out of $1 worth of scrap tubing.
It only took $100 worth of labor to getter done

Here's the beginning of the next 4" plate.
A 2-1/2" single cap with the downcomer in the middle.
I think, the first time I saw this design was when pythonshine posted about it awhile back.

Here's the big single plate with a central downcomer.
I haven't soldered the downcomer in yet, I'm waiting for the other parts.
Hope the cup on the downcomer is deep enough, think I'll soft solder this part together.
Incase I have to take it apart.

I like the single cap central downcomer design. It works great in my 3". That's the only kind I think I will build again. Super simple and effective.

Looks good Shady,

Long as the liquid depth on plate is equivalent to liquid depth in cup you will be fine.

Yeah, I will hopefully be contributing some cool stuff in the next little while but PF is right on that.

If the big deep single plate don't work, I'll modify it till it does.
I saw some copper rivets at lowe's. The next plate might be made with copper rivets for valves.
I haven't a clue what the physics and math says about the size and number of holes filled with valves.
Figure I'll make as many valved holes that will fit in the available space.

Glass is not an acceptable medium to use as a column right? I have read this time and time again and am wondering if it is OK because of the glass or the method or.........

Sorry, I am confused.

I would love to do a glassier, but, I thought it was a bit dodge, is it OK now?

Not all glass is equal Freaky.

Much of what we read about glass being a bad choice has to do with folks using a mason jar for thumpers and such.

The glass these gents are using is the equivalent to 7 mm thick borosilicate.

Certainly it is glass and will break if you drip on the floor but it has been engineered to cope with far more than 212.

Think Pyrex.

I'll finish this up tomorrow.
I haven't a clue as to size, or number of holes under the valve umbrella's
Nor, the plate liquid depth.
But I'll be using guestimation and the easiest way to getter done.
I'll also try to build it were mods are easy

Have you got a link giving info on that build?
Looks like something I'd like to study
