Sour smell

Post by whitewaterqb »

I have an AG mash, my first attempt at an AG. I'm wondering if the sour smell coming off the ferment after three days is normal. Also should I remove the cap or push it down?
It's like a sore dick...Tough to beat!!

No, I don't think it's normal, but hell I've limited experience with AG. Mine smelled great, even to the end. I just felt for ya that no one was responding, so I thought what the heck. Bring it back to the top so some experts could respond. :moresarcasm:

You can get a lacto infection that will make it smell sour, for now I wouldn't worry about it too much, if it is there it is there and you can't get it out. It may go away in a few days, it may stay till you run it. I see people actually infect their ferments on purpose, I reckon just go with it and don't worry none :)
Getting back into stilling after a few years off.

Matter of perspective when it's your first . What you call sour now might become wonderful when you get experience . All of us have experienced those 'opening night jitters' . Best I can tell you is ride it out and then run it . Ya lost it if ya don't and if ya do it may be some of the best you ever made .
If you ain't the lead dog in the team , the scenery never changes . Ga Flatwoods made my avatar and I want to thank him for that .
Don't drink water , fish fornicate in it .

Got to agree with TB on that one. I have had some mashes that smell great but produce a mediocre whisky, while there have been some that smell a little off put out some great whisky. I would finish it out and run it. Oh by the way don't mess with it too much close it up and let it finish. Leave the cap alone when it finishes the cap will fall.

Yup it'll fall when it done.
If you have fear . Get you a reed an push thru the cap an draw some out.
cap won't fall. It ain't gotta taste good but it gotta taste true.
If it started changing still charge it but quick.

So I'm tole
