Anyone catch the special "Rum Runners and Moonshiners" on the history channel today? Pretty informative and all around good entertainment..Never realized Nascar was more or less founded by ppl that ran moonshine.

I've watched it probably a half dozen times... Not that I have watched it intently all of those times... Most of those times were late at night, in bed, with my laptop on my lap, reading this site at the same time... Not sure if it has been because of the screen writers guild strike or not but there hasn't been much on other than reruns...

Junior "Chicken" Johnson is the most famous NASCAR shine runner.
Did time...got a presidential pardon.
Met him once. Nice feller. Some one you just want to sit on the porch and sip with.

i was suprised to learn that people still go to jail for shining, idk but it kinda seems stupid now since there aint no prohibition. I mean who the hell are these guys selling their liquor to to make it worth their time?

Nascar is also pretty unique because it started in the South with moonshiners...and out west in California with the hot rodders. The shiners who started racing circle dirt tracks were of course Southern boys but Californians and their modifications of stock cars helped create the racing side of Nascar.

You would be supprized how much shine is sold on the nascar circuit.I have ran into it at almost every race in one form or the other. The apple pie shine is a big hit.
