Over the past weekend I decided to do a basic cornflake mash from one of the recipes I've seen posted on one of the other forum threads. http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopi ... 11&t=31371
I did it a just a tad bit differently.
I finely crushed 3lbs of Kellogg's Corn Flakes
8lbs of Cane Sugar to scale up
5 Gallons of Well Water
Starting Gravity: 1.096
Sugar Level: 22
Potential Alcohol: 12%
I used BSG Red Star Distiller's Yeast and added BSG Yeast Nutrient
Any thoughts?
I made two mashes, I always make 2 so I can end up with more volume at the end of the run.
I pitched my yeast this past Sunday night and Monday morning my airlocks were dancing!
The original post said that the mash will ferment after 5 days. I usually give them 2 weeks but I'll test the gravity this weekend and see if its done. Hopefully I can run it over the long weekend.

Why you babysitting only two or three shots? I'mma show you how to turn it up a notch. First you get a swimming pool full of liquor, then you dive in it!

I think your OG is too big. Indicative of a novice...trying to boost the %ABV without regard to what the high gravity ferment will produce in the way of off flavors.JayTeeDee wrote:...Starting Gravity: 1.096...Potential Alcohol: 12%...Any thoughts?..
The cornflake recipe (in the T&T) is great. Depending how far you strayed from the T&T, your results may be different. I hope it turns out OK (for you).
Be safe, responsible, and discrete.

Yea I thought it was high too. My early Cornmeal/Sugar Mashes had a starting gravity of 1.085 and 1.092 with a potential alcohol of 11% & 12% so this one is my highest gravity mash to date. Those runs turned out really good if I say so myself.still_stirrin wrote:I think your OG is too big. Honestly I wasn't going for increased alcohol. Publix just so happened to have one of those B1G1 on the cornflakes and so I bought 4 boxes of them. I don't eat cereal and didn't want to leave half a box around and didn't want to waste half a box so I just used all of it and scaled the sugar up to compensate for the added flakes.
Hopefully this one will end up being good.
