Just getting started in Colorado

Post by CoNolaStillGuy »

Hello all.
I've been a lurker here for a few months reading articles and trying to gather as much information as possible. My head is spinning from reading so much...
This is something I have wanted to do for a while and finally jumped in. I considered purchasing a rig completely built but the more I looked around, I decided I could put something together myself. I built a column and coupled it to a pony keg as a boiler and added a Liebig condenser.

I have already done a water vinegar run for cleaning. My solder joints held (which surprised me as I have never brazed pipe before this project) and the condenser worked like a switch. I'm hoping to do an alcohol cleaning run soon and then a full distillation pending the results of that.

I've attached a pic of my rig. I am considering making a longer condenser in the future as my intuition says more heat transfer the better.

A big thanks to all on here for the wealth of information.

Yup, that's a pretty short Liebig. Looks like about 12" between the water connections. Might be fine for a slow spirit run but you'd be much more satisfied with a much longer Liebig for stripping runs. I have a very similar Liebig but about 26" between water connections. I can strip about 5 gallons in a little over an hour.
