First still build - 2" bokakob

Many like to post about a first successful ferment (or first all grain mash), or first still built/bought or first good run of the still. Tell us about all of these great times here.
Pics are VERY welcome, we drool over pretty copper 8)

First still build - 2" bokakob

Post by BoydLabBuck »

It's not 100% finished (adding a Liebig to the takeoff this weekend), but here's my first attempt at a build. I have very few tools that would make this easier, so I basically built this with a dremel, hacksaw, torch and tin snips. Given those limitations I'm happy with how it turned out. I've been drinking from the firehose of information on this site for 3 weeks straight.

2" bokakob closely based on Pikluk's build http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopi ... =17&t=5829

Boiler is 36L, column is 2" x 36" tall to a male x female coupling to easily disconnect the head. Head is about 14" tall, due in part to a slightly longer condenser coil to compensate for wide coil spacing.

The condenser was the worst part by far. It's not great, and I might give it another shot if I don't like my results. I did it all alone, so next time I would make sure to have a second set of hands.. Made one attempt without filling the piping and it failed miserably. Watched a cool youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5WfPeLX1V0 and built a very crude jig out of furring strips and some 1/2" pipe. I later found out my jig is similar to this one already done by Braz http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopi ... 32&t=13585

I made a parrot too but forgot to take pictures.

Total build cost (including parrot) ~$350 sourcing through Amazon, McMaster and Lowes. I think I could easily cut $50 out of it if I spent more time price shopping.

Plan to do my first mash this weekend, then get some product prepared for Christmas time :D
