Diluting the 80% product

Please excuse my inexperience in advance. The dilution calculation on main site suggests that if you dilute 1 litre of 80% Abv with 1 litre of water you end up with 40% Abv . That sounds logical, but is it really correct ?
1 litre of 80% contains 800 mls Ethanol + 200 mls water,
if you then add another 2000 mls of water the result is 800mls Ethanol in 2200 miles of water.
Which calculates to 36.6% Abv NOT 40%
Have I got this totally wrong ?
Whisky cheers
