I recalled the other day I used to know a chap who is a emergency room doctor who happened to be mormon. He made mention of his interest in plant medicines and somehow along that line we got on the topic of amanita mushrooms. Which have a long history of use in a variety of cultures. He made mention of historical accounts of his religions founder giving his followers a wine that made them giggle, cry and see angels. And damned if that guy didn't grow up on the east coast spending lots of time in the Forrest's. Founded a religion based on golden scrolls only he could see. I mean, you ever see a washed out amanita? The color fades to a golden shade and the sun curls up the edges. Some theorize the fruit of the tree of the knowledge if good and evil is not the apple, but the amanita that grows on it's roots. But I digress.... Just found the link interesting.

Your name isn't Donald E. Teeter, by any chance is it? About this time last year I responded to a mushroom thread here @ HD. I responded with a little information about the amanita muscaria too.

So I've checked out your link and downloaded the “Herb Of Immortality” PDF-book. I'll keep the document for my own reference because one of my pet projects is researching and writing about psychoactive alkaloids. I make 5 gallons of wine almost every year but I won't be making myself any of this sacramental ambrosia wine (about page 77). The author's mystical or quasi religious agenda is fairly well spelled out on page 113. I may find the time to read the whole book someday.

Centuries past several gruit beers and vermut (vermouth) type wines had psychoactive herbs, spices and mushrooms added. I may or may not be seeing God soon enough anyway so I won't be needing the help of any mushroom. Check out this wikipedia link to the explanation of “enthenogen”

After that, scroll down to the picture of the San Pedro cactus. I have two of those cacti in my atrium that are about seven feet tall. I doubt I'll be lacing any homemade tequila with the mescaline that I have there either.
