I'm on day two of my mash ferment and I can yell ya;'I could sit on the floor and watch it for hours. Seeing it come alive is pretty cool. A steady indoor temp of 70*f so it isn't kickin ass but it's coming along. Oh how I love hearing my bucket bubble!
A sad thing is; my babies are gonna be sacrificed as a cleaning run.

So don't use them. Buy the cheapest vodka you can find and run that for your sacrificial cleaning. Then whatever it is that you're fermenting can produce something you can drink.

You could always make a video
That way you can watch it any time you like. You could even watch it on your TV like one of those fire log videos at Christmas
Or just make another ferment.

With my 10 gal. Alembic, I think the cost for enough cheap vodka would outweigh what I have invested now, which is about $12 bucks.

Good idea Crank. I may have to set up my video camera and make myself a screen saver!

It's cool to watch them go through the stages of fermentation. In my video the first one was a tomato wine that came about as the result of some weak tomato juice that I got while getting ready to can some home made tomato sauce. It was actually taken after the initial violent fermentation phase once the cap settled. I noticed the plumes erupting from the sediment and thought that was so cool I needed to get it on video. The 2nd part was apple cider, again after the initial fermentation settled down and the third part was a cider that I got just a little too much juice in the carboy and thought the result was just cool. This is one reason I like fermenting in glass, I can see whats going on. This whole thing makes me think maybe I should make more videos just because the ferments are so mesmerizing

As a newby, so far so good with my ferments. Yesterday I worked up 10 gal. of sweet feed in a 15 gal. barrel and within an hour and a half, o=c=o had my airlock bubbling every second. My wife at this point has reservations on my new hobby but as I sit here about half crashed on the couch, the blub..blub..blub.. from my barrel literally slows me to that pace and congeals any stringent thoughts or concerns of the day. Probably because I'm in wait of when this damn ferment will be ready! See there, just thinking about making a run has me goosed up and I done forgot about my wife. (Been there done, done that) God help me if she ever sees this.

You don't fill it with 80 proof vodka ... just a bottle or two. You only need purchase enough to replicate the amount of alcohol in a typical charge. A 1.75L "handle" of Popov or Vladimir is sufficient. The only downside is the shame you feel at checkout.

i picked up a 1.75L of Vladimir today and you are so correct. I did feel ashamed and embarrassed.
