Movement to legalize in the USA

Is there anyone organizing to legalize distilling in the US? Writing to my congressman isn't really going to make a difference.

I don't think I want to write a letter to my congressman about legalizing home distilling.
Let's see:
Name+Address= Busted
Sounds like a losing proposition.
I agree

I agree Joe,
There are numerous organizations that try to get Pot legalized. I'm wondering if there are any out there trying to get distilling legalized.
It seems silly that in my city Pot under an OZ is now legal but I can't boil some wash.

Thanks Dunderhead,
It just makes no sense that in my city you can have in your possession an illegal substance that's illegal to grow.
But it’s illegal to make a substance that's totally legal.
Of course I know I’m preaching to the choir here.
Since the other thing has been on the ballot here I assumed that there was something similar on the distilling front.
I'll search

I see what your saying.
I'll leave it alone. If there is an organization out there I would love to support it.
I don't need to debate it here. For the most part we obviously all agree.

Like Dnder said ther was a post in the off-topic forum about a bill in congress. Researching the bill number, I didn't find anything.

According to a book I am reading "Moonshine" by Mathew somebody, there was a bill introduced for this purpose in 2001 but it got slapped down pretty hard and according to him the movement is regaining momentum. Someone could get their congressman to stop by and demonstrate some end product "alot of product" take some pictures by the still and use them for blackmale maybe. Invite some strippers over, or a goat. Maybe that would lite a fire under something other than a keg.

it's not the morality of alcohol which is in question here. it's tax revenues.
the government couldn't care less if you drink yourself into oblivion...but you gotta pay to play.

Yet I can make a couple hundred gallons of beer and wine legally at home, and they don't get a cent of taxes from that.
And speaking of tax, there also the disparity between excise tax on beer, wine under %14 alcohol, wine over %14 alcohol, and spirits-doesn't really make sense.
Not that I expect the Govt to behave logically or anything...

In most parts of the US you can legally produce up to 400 gallons of just about any fermentable concoction and have it considered a hobby as long as it is for personal consumption... Unfortunately, we can't distill it down (to optimize storage space - yeah, that's it) without going fully "legal", meaning full disclosure for taxation purposes, even if it is for personal consumption...
It's just wrong, but they say that they're protecting us from ourselves... Ummm... My days of needing a babysitter passed long ago... I need burped...!!!

A lot is due to ignorance and uninformed perception (I think I just repeated a redundancy) including lawmakers.
Most folks think you "make" alcohol when you distill but not when you brew. Never figured that one out. 5 gallon of beer is OK as long as all the ingredients are mixed but it is a grave offense if the ingredients are ever separate? But there is the tax issue mentioned also. Follow the money...

The tax issue would be the same for beer and wine as it would be for spirits wouldn't it? It does seem rather odd they make such a big deal about "untaxed liquor" when it is spirits, but allow specialized shops for beer and wine.

That's why it seems irrational to me that distilled spirits are treated differently...

And since I am a rational person I have decided to ignore this particular law
. After chatting with my local home brew store owner who carries a few distilling accessories, he seems to think that judging from the number of HD in my city, the local law enforcement officers seem to be at least a little rational too
.

Unfortunately i was just thinking the same thing, but I just read that spirits are taxed much more than beer and wine. They are only taxed a few cents but liquor is taxed something like 2 dollars. But shouldn't we atleast be able to obtain a permit or something to be able to distill for consuption as long as we pay taxes for what we make or something?

We should be able to make our OWN without taxation.
We are taking a legal tax free product, and simply making it more economical for storage purposes.

I agree but I doubt we could get them to agree to that.

Why,
Simply use NZ as the example. They also tax booze "sold", but changed the laws to allow home production for NON commercial consumption.
The tax revenue that they receive actually WENT UP. The "tax loss" argument is a simple red-herring argument.
Put it this way, how big of a percentage of the sheeple actually produce their own beer/wine? Not many. I would bet that less than 1% of the beer drank in this country is home brewed. The tax loss (if there ever was one), was simply a drop in the bucket.
Remember folks, we are NOT doing what 99% of the people would be doing, even if it were legal. Yes, if it were legal, then there would be a larger group doing this, but as it is (and as it will be once we DO get this legal), the home hobby distiller is a very rare animal (compared with the number of people who drink spirits). Most people are simply too busy watching "american idol", or playing WoW, or other such trash, as to worry about making their own hooch.

Agree with Wineo, you may as well sign your name with a paint brush and have the next guy paint a target on your ass before signing his name.

Gas to get propane burner - taxed
Propane burner - taxed
gas to get propane refilled - taxed
Vehicle to haul this stuff in - taxed
Property - taxed
Material to build structure so I don't have stand out in the rain - taxed
Wife's stuff so she stays off my back - taxed, taxed, taxed.
