I was woke up this morning by a 5.4 quake.It was 41 miles away in so.illinois.
The house was shaking pretty bad.It was about 4.45 am.

I don't live anywhere close thank God. I got enough of that crap when I lived in California. I was there for the quake in '93 I think it was, I definately don't miss it. I hope all is ok. Watch out for the aftershocks, that was actually kind of fun for a country boy like me who knew I didn't have to stay there. My wife always says, "it doesn't take much to amuse a man."

It hit here in Louisville Ky, wineo. We lost a facade from the top of one older building. I was awake and remembered the feeling from '68 and another back in the late 80's. This one shook more than any I remembered though.
I felt a tremor yesterday about 10:00 am EST. It was unusual because it was just a vibration. No one else I talked to felt it and thought I was crazy of course. I would be interested in seeing the history of the tremors leading up to the quake to verify that what I felt yesterday was actually on of the tremors leading up to the quake.

wow earthquake in that part of the country is pretty unusual and will cause a lot of damage. out here in California the buildings are made for shakers that small (or big depending how ya look at it.) hope everyone is OK.

Such an odd coincidence...102 years ago today was "the big shaker" in San Francisco. My family was there and have some good stories about it.

I'm down here in Southern Illinois...it woke us up. The whole house was shaking, but no real shocks or damage. Shakes aren't really rare around here...we're not too far from the New Madrid fault line, which could make the San Andreas look like a sissy, if it ever lets go.

Tornado Alley and earthquakes, oh my. I forgot to add that the ticks around here are so bad that they have mosquitoes biting on them. I went into the edge of the woods yesterday to cut some bean poles and had to pull three ticks off...and it's only April.

Well, if you felt the earthquake but didn't _hear_ it, there's no need to panic. At least not out here.

yeh looks like you're getting some decent aftershocks. just releasing a bit more pressure now that the big slip happened. pretty frightening if you're in a building which isn't designed to handle a shaker.

Were going to get a big one around here someday.
The last big one was in 1812,and it made the rivers run backwards,and change course.Theres not too many buildings around these parts built before 1812.
If one that big hit here today,it would be a huge disaster with big damage in quite a few major citys.

I felt it while I was getting ready for work, but I did not think much about it at the time. To be honest, I though a large truck was coming down my side street, LOL. Trust me, I've been through my share of earthquakes while in Europe! Guess I should have known something was up when both my dog and my fiancé would not stop barking at the same time!!

We had another one!It was a 4.5 this time,and it was 37 miles away.It was different than the last few.The shaking lasted over a minute,and was not as intence,but it had a series of bumps throughout the thing.My friend lives just 4 miles from the epicenter.He has 7 girls in the house and they were all having trouble sleeping after the first 2 quakes.I bet hes a nervous reck.

Earthquakes are a terrible thing! That New Madrid Fault Line is deep in the bedrock from what I read. That's why when tremors do occur they are so terrible. You can set up/sign up for e-mail and/or RSS notifications to come to you from USGS. I have mine set up for my home in Italy, but I honestly never though to set it up for local area trouble!!

It's not so much the vertical shaking, but the horizontal shaking that most often results in damage. This is even truer with these little shakers. My farm house/ villa in Italy survived WWII bombing and Nazi occupation, but not the series of earthquakes we had in '87 and '92. Parts of the house are over 300 years old and fell like nothing.
I remember very well an incident in '92 because we were staying in one of my grandfather’s houses and we had to jump out of the windows because bricks were falling on us. Of course, I had the house re-built after. I should try to upload some pictures, just temporary. Yeah, I think I will

A few more pictures. My web site should be up by next week, maybe the week after. Have to see how things go. This is the "main" church in my village. Mind you, we have 2 large churches, 2 smaller churches (one of which I was baptized in), and 5 shrines. At one time the population of my town was over 2000 people. Today that number has dwindled to about 300 because nobody wants to work the land any more and everybody has become materialistic. I only need to work for 10 more years, and then I can retire back to my home and farm and distill to my hearts content. Luckily, I found a woman who feels the same way. The only reason I’m typing that is because she’s right here overlooking me saying “show them the pictures of the church”, LOL.
