Shine turns milky

Post by Bikes n Booze »

I just mixed some 95% spirit 50\50 with tapwater. The shine and water were crystal clear before mixing. Never had this happen before. Came from a batch of TPW. Stripped and then run through a VM column. Added bicarb to the stripped product (as always). Any thoughts?

Tails....

The cloudiness comes from dissolved oils in the spirit, when diluted, coagulate/coalesce and form the cloud. Better cuts will reduce their presence in your product. But since you’ve already passed that point in time, the tails are a part of your spirit.

Two ways to eliminate the cloudiness: 1) add more high proof alcohol (it’ll redissolve the oils), and 2) rerun the spirit through your still and make better cuts, leaving the tails for your feints jar.

But consider this....does the cloudiness adversely affect the flavor? And when you mix the spirit with other liquids, soda or juice for example, can you even notice the cloudiness?

Bottomline, it’s not a “deal breaker”. Learn from it and you’ll have succeeded in the process.
