Preheating help clear wash?
Ok, I got the idea to build a wash preheater out of my 30 Qt. turkey fryer pot and some extra hot water heater parts to cut down on gas use. I figure an hour of electricity is cheaper than 30 minutes of propane and I was hankering to destroy or build something. I got the idea this morning as I was cleaning my keg boiler that I could in theory use the wash preheater set at approximately 150* to kill off the yeast in the wash then let it clear again and rack it into the still and that would make for a cleaner run. Am I way off reality here? I'm running a kind of hybrid pot still and don't like that nasty crap in the bottom of my boiler after each run, soaking in vinegar and water (I call it doucheing the still) and then rinsing, rinsing and rinsing some more. It's not really that bad but I like it to be like new each run. I rack off my wash into 5 gallon glass carboys then let it settle for a day or 2 and then rack it off gently into the still already, would it be worth the extra expense of preheating?
15 gallon pot still, 2"x18" column with liebeg condensor on propane.
