Glycerin for smoothness?

So a friend of mine, who is I should note a fantastic beer brewer, and I were tasting some of my young whiskey. He had a small bottle of Glycerin and poured probably about a teaspoon into each glass of whiskey. He said it would probably smooth it out. Does anyone know anything about this? I didn't really taste the difference and I'm not dead so I've got that going for me.
