Letting it rest

How do you guys "let liquor rest"? Odin's recipe advises letting the gin rest for five weeks. I've also heard it said for other recipes.
I have two gallon jugs of gin currently "resting"- one has the cap on The Jug the other has a paper towel rubber banded around the top. I'll compare the two in another 4 weeks.
I have about 24- 350 ml bottles of Limoncello currently resting with corks and wax over the cork.
I also have several gallons of Honey Bear resting in a Carboy with Stopper.
Is there more desirable way to rest liquor?
