Hello from Melbourne

Post by fattima »

Hey folks,

Just joining up here to learn and hopefully get involved in distilling. I'm from Melbourne Australia and I brew beer from all grain and have a Grainfather setup, so know about mashes and all that stuff. I'm a total newbie when it comes to distilling so will probably be asking some dumb questions while reading over the forum  . At the moment I'm lost with what type of still to start with, but I'd like to use the Grainfather if possible in the process to cut down on buying too much equipment. Looking at making a clear spirits (gin for the the other half) and whisky. In no hurry to get a setup, currently building a new garage to brew in so time for research now. Any suggestions welcome!

Welcome along fattima.

Good old Melbourne hey ... hipster capital of Australia, but that's nothing to be ashamed about. The hipster movement has revived the whole fine food, beer, wine and fancy sprits thing.

If you've got heaps of hipster mates, they'll probably appreciate a good gin. Personally I haven't bothered to research making gin yet but a good start to making a decision on which still to make is to ask yourself what you want to be drinking.
Sounds to me that you want to make a fancy mash and pull flavors from it ( judging by the effort you go to in making beer)

You've definitely come to the right place to do your homework. You will find absolutely everything here.

All the best

Cheer crow eater, haha not too many hipsters out my way!

My mates love my beer, so reckon I could do a good mash for some whisky. Just trying to work out best setups etc. Lots of research to do.
Will look at doing gin to keep the other half happy.

Thanks for the welcome

Welcome here from the other croweater that lives up the track from ya. Your AG beer mashing will hold ya in good sted although you will fine the mashing techniques are not absolutely indentical when it comes to stuff like mashing out and also a lot less stress about haze and sterilisation .

My nephew makes nice Scotch with a Brewmeister, so we are going to get one too.

Hi Fatima

And welcome I nearly bought a grainmaster but bought the t500 still instead, I think there made by the same people anyway this should fit in the hole in the lid but you might want to get the stainless one.

Thanks for the welcomes.
I used to do BIAB for beer then my mates all bought me a Grainfather for me 50th birthday, it's a good bit of gear. From what I understand it should work well as a boiler since it has a power control for the element. Still heaps of research to do!
