pH controller

Is a pH controller like this one used to dose in saturated limewater:

overkill on sugar washes which tend to crash?

I've use them on an aquarium, but maybe it works as well (and is certainly cheaper) to dump in some chalk at the start or a a handful of oyster shells and not think too much.

For most ferments, a daily check is plenty. If you need more buffering, try adding both citric acid and calcium carbonate at the beginning. It allows you to increase the dissolved cc and still have the right ph.

I also like a ph lower than 5, so the controller in the link would not work.

Right, you'd need the MC110 model to control in a range of 3.5 to 7.5.

Edit: which doesn't actually have control, just a monitor, so that wouldn't work anyway.
