Can anyone tell me whether a 2" SS ferrule will slide inside a 2" copper pipe or is it exactly 2". I want to braize it in and need to know if I should also order some couplings if the sizes are both 2". Info on various suppliers sites seems ambiguous.

Well if you live in Australia you will need the couplings as its the same size ....Other countries use ID pipe and it is apparently a tight fit but it will go over the ferrule with a bit of "gentle" persuasion

EDIT: tried to copy a dimensions chart here but anyway the outside diameter of a 2" ferule is 50.8mm

There are lots of different standards of copper pipe which will make a difference to how things fit (E.g. DWV, type M, type L etc) as the inside diameter will be different.

You need to know the ID of the pipe you have.

Anecdotally, my 2" ferrule fit just about right inside my DWV 2" pipe.

Your question brings in the reason we like to know why we like to know where you are from on the globe. The ID and OD sizes are different across the globe. In the USA ID of copper is as 1" is 1" weather it type K,L M, the wall thickness will vary so the OD 's are all different. With 2"ID copper the standard 2" SS ferrule will fit with a little coaching.

Hi from Australia. I got my 2" SS ferrules from 5 Star here in Oz and they are a good fit inside local 2 inch copper tube. Guess it's the luck of the draw.

Can't speak for outside North America, but we use imperial measure for plumbing and most structural materials despite Canada being a metric country.

Pipe used for various plumbing applications will actually have a standardized OD that is 1/8 inch over nominal. The ID of plumbing pipe will vary with the type or wall thickness. For the sizes we a hobby distillers use most often types L or M usually are closest to the namesake sizing with respect to their ID. Using DWV is attractive due to lower cost but having thinner walls makes the ID a sloppy fit to other types of pipe or tube, like sanitary stainless tube and fittings. Types L and M will be a closer fit and be easier to use but at greater cost.

Sanitary type fittings are sized by OD. They are available in different wall thicknesses, but it is the ID that varies, not the OD. This is where we see confusion fitting up copper plumbing to stainless sanitary. It can be hard to get a nice snug fit between the two differing measurement specifications.

I guess ill just wait and see what they send, measure it and expand the 2" or machine down the ferrules depending. Thanks for all the replies.

I second this statement (US of A here) and a plumber of new construction in my past history.

Pipe fitting hubs (where the pipe is inserted for soldering) is standardized so you can use DWV, type L, M, K, or what ever (rigid) copper pipe in the same fittings. But, the ID will vary due to the different wall thicknesses, and service pressure ratings.
