I see that bushman is having ankle surgery tomorrow. I am having my second cancer surgery in 6 weeks tomorrow also, same exact procedure

as 6 weeks ago      because they what to make sure they got it all. (or possibly a Porsche payment is looming  )

They medical profession knows most of us have a yearly deductibles to insurance to make and it is much easier to get you to go once it is made this late in the year. It is like the slip and fall lawyers, they play the same game. Then insurance cost goes up consumer pays more because it's regulated by law to work that way. I had 4 prostrate surgery's 3 is one year.

one thing we got going for us in the frozen north... nationalized medicine has some big benefits. occasionally we get some bright spot crook with a medical license trying to play the system, but it's rare. Dentists and vets sure like to make you pay though. 400 to get a cleaning and basic checkup. 600 for your dog.

we don't get bleeding edge specialists like y'all, there just isn't as many people here, but we get some damn fine care, as required. It is goddamn amazing what modern medicine can do. I read a study not long ago that mused : if you were alive in 2015 the odds of you living to 100 were very good...all thanks to new medicine, now and coming down the pike.

best wishes for all facing health challenges, stay positive knowing you have some great medicine working for you...giving you the opportunity to keep making bad decisions!

Here in the US, I get the best care money can buy
I pay not only for Health care and Doctors.
But also insurance companies, lawyers, politicians, lobbyist's, advertisements, the stock market and the uninsured.

HDNB yep we have Medicare as well and have for the last 40 years, it is singularly the best moral decision the government has made in the last 200 years. The Top one percent might not be fans but a return to the third world system ain't ever going to happen here.

I’m a 6 time cancer survivor myself, with my first fight 35 years ago. I was not supposed to live through the first bouts, but I guess I’m just f-ing tough to kill. Been following progress on medications and treatments the entire time, and have seen some incredible advancements in the last 10 years especially. I seriously never thought I would live this long, but the longer I live the more hope I have that many of the cancers will be cured in my lifetime.

Just this week I read a major study that shows that one of the more obscure forms of sugar molecules, mannose, in your diet greatly hinders the growth of many common forms of cancer. https://apple.news/AM38zicVfTMufw0dA-s3SoA" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow Lots of good research going on.

For anyone going through this the best advice I have is to stay positive. It helps you and everyone around you.

Fuck Cancer.

I've lost 3 friends to cancer in the past year.
Smart, wise friends whose loss is real not only to me but to all who knew them.
My own problems seem trivial in comparison.

Good for you cob. Nothing like a little rest time for the body to recouperate and a chance to get your appetite back. As you get ready for the next round be sure to eat well and show a lot of appreciation for those that support you.

I still remember the first thing I craved after weeks of chemo; taco time fried buritos and greasy tacos. Something about all that fat that my body just craved. This was back when the fat they fried their food in was the not so healthy kind, and it tasted great.

Fuck Cancer!

I am rooting for all of you. I have one family member that is now 6 years clear and another that is still fighting it hard.It makes me feel so fortunate, as I type with one hand in a cast, that all I do is break and wear out parts .

When young and in good health we often think that the old saying about your health being the most important thing that you have is a bit of a cliché.
Its not until you get sick, experience disease of one sort or another or start to fall apart from old age or life's other wear and tear that you begin to realize just how true it is.
Wishing the best to everyone out there who is experiencing health problems.

Cob sorry to hear, I am now out of a boot and for the first time in 3 months able to drive a car. I am getting around better but still have a limp. I don’t need the crutches but a cane helps on long walks. As we get older we just don’t bounce like we used too. Obviously with this I haven’t been able to do anything with the hobby but looking forward to getting back into it. The advantage I had was my wife and I got to board the plane first on our way to the desert to get out of this below freezing weather in the northwest.

Take note all you young healthy people here on HD forums...don't wait...this isn't a hobby to save for your retirement and old age, do it now while you can enjoy it...old age doesn't suck, getting here has been a wonderful journey, it just places some limitations on you when you get a little long in the tooth,
so my advise is...brew it, still it and swill it...enjoy it while your young, because time will creep up on you one day, and bite you in the ass!

Cob, we have multiple family members doing chemo at the moment. Wishing you the best outcomes. It's no fun, for sure. Trying to kill the cancer before the treatment kills you. Hope you can at least enjoy some good liquor.

Best wishes and thoughts to all of you from a 28 year cancer survivor.

Ask every question you and yours can think of. They seem to be weary or too busy of telling you everything.

And expect the after treatments to be a ball buster. Rest even if you feel o.k.

Okay, I am taking a risk here and its probably going to blow back up in my face, but if people suffer and there may be ways to help, I can't shut up.

First let me state I am no MD. I have a doctorate in business administration and change management, not in health care. Secondly, let me tell you that I have been very ill up until about a year ago. So ill that it felt like I could drop dead at the spot any moment. A little over a year ago I was diagnosed with pre-diabetics, the early stages of rheumatroid artritis, obesity, asthmatic bronchitis, pneumonia (second time in 18 months), whooping cough (second time in a year) and 3 self-induced (coughing) broken ribs. In the years before I had already undergone 3 shoulder surgeries because of calcified tendoins.

I noticed I wasn't the only one having issues. Many of my friends, my family, my parents were suffering from so-called Western Diseases. Why was there so much suffering in the world? A world, a Western World, that was supposed to give us an easy life? I went on a journey of research and analysis. Not unlike how I learned about distilling. And was able to innovate on the processes underlying distilling in no small way. What I am saying is that I found the causes and defined a solution. Not for every one and for every case. But a dramatic change in the current statistics of the unhealthy is possible, increasing your potential numbers to achieve success and health and maybe even recovery.

If there is interest to learn more, let me know. I am not going to be spoon feeding anyone. I have put 1000's of hours and it is the journey, the investment, that makes the answers digestable. And if anyone feels their health is not to be discussed online, please know I can dedicate part of my limited off-working hours for one-on-one as well.

To summarize: one year later, I am no longer obese. I lost 10 kilo's, while at the same time gaining 10 kilo's of muscle. So that's 20 kilo's of water and fat loss. My joints work great again. My insuline sensitivity has fully returned and I am no longer pre-diabetic. I am no longer prone to pneumatic or the whooping cough, it seems. In fact, I haven't had as much as a cold in the last year. I started sporting again and on the first time I went to the gym I lifted 20% more than I had ever done before. Including when I was 20-something, and boxing and weight lifting for 2 hours a day. I am stronger than I ever have been and I am actually training for the 500 meters indoor rowing world championship 50+. Please know that the first time I ever sat on a rowing machine was like 7 or 8 months ago and I am only now intensifying (is that is the right word) my training regime from a one time a week 10 minute session to a once per day 10 minute training. Amazing recovery, improvements everywhere.

So, if I can help out, please let me know. Again, it won't be spoon feeding from my end. And if I feel any push back or animosity, its over as far as my participation is concerned. Have to make that crystal clear because I have been dealt a black eye on controversial topics on this forum once too often.

Odin.

Man, getting old's a b*tch. I don't know many people on this forum, but we share a lot more than just chasing the craft. The VA takes pretty good care of me. I'll not complain about that.
My sympathies to all that are ailing. The gift to remain curious in spite of our difficulties is inspiring. Picking up the hobby at 73 makes me want to take good care of myself. So much to do, so little time.
God bless and Semper Fi.

Notwithstanding a genetic malady or an environmental influence (to re-iterate Odin's point), inflammation is the root cause for all age related disease.
Insulin sensitivity is key. Refreshing one's insulin receptors is very important, but also becomes more difficult as we get older. Getting off the extra weight is so important. Men should shoot for 20% body fat or less. Woman should should for 30% body fat or less.
More activity and less frequent food (and alcohol)consumption helps.
Though alcohol is marvelous with respect to "medicating" our brains,,,,it's (sadly) terrible for optimal hormone balance.

+1

Close to 10 years ago I changed doctors and my blood test revealed slightly elevated liver enzymes. The new doctor remarked "It looks like you're a drinker, is that right?" After I confessed, he disclosed that the liver can greatly repair itself (if its not too inflamed/gone) within 6 weeks, so I abstained completely and my liver enzymes nicely returned to normal. (I also remember him saying that he automatically doubled the number of drinks his patients tell him they partake in, but that's another story.)

So now I annually skip drinking any alcohol from 12/31 to April 1. (So I had a few drams during this year's Super Bowl - that doesn't count). I go right back to my habits during the other 9 months, but at least I get to start each year's 'drinking season' with a fresh liver. I only share this for those who may be thinking this is a good thing, and it can be done.

I've been jogging between 60-100mi a month for three years now, and the benefits (out of pre-diabetic range) are real, but I still feel the overall wear and tear of 60+ years. Just changed docs again and anxiously awaiting my full blood panel in the coming days. Wish me luck.

It's good to see so many on this thread respecting the wisdom of slowing down and taking care of ourselves.

Some gross numbers:

In 1910 around 5% of the people would get cancer. In 1930, the number rises to 1:15. When we enter the 1950's, the statistics rise to 1:10. The 70's see the number of people who get cancer in their life rise to 1:5. Currently the number is worse than 1:3.

People born in 1930 had a 10% chance of becoming (pre) diabetic. 15% is the number 20 years later. In the 70's we see another rise to 35%. Currently 85% of the people now born will get this horrible desease. LWTCS makes a very important point about insulin resistance. Insuline is a hormone whose production is triggered by sugar consumption. There is a strong connection between the two (cancer and diabetics as well as both stats). Here's what I found to be a great clue (thanks Dr. Warburg):

Healthy cells can derive energy from both fat and sugar (lipids and carbohydrates). Cancer cells can only get their energy from sugar / carbohydrates. Ok, there is a bit more to it, but this is a major one.
