Refining lentil

Hey,
I've managed to get my hands on a free refining lentil for my pot still. Have never used one before, but pretty happy with free equipment!
I always imagined they had two pipes on them - one to pump water into and one for the water to flow out of. Just like a worm, I suppose. But it only has an outlet pipe on it.
Am I right in thinking you're supposed to put a towel or cloth over the lentil, then manually pour water over it every so often? That doesn't seem like such a good process - have I got something wrong?
