Heater vents

I know, I know, it’s been discussed to death. “Rapid aging” But I have to let you in on a little gem that Cranky suggested in a pm to me last year. He probably doesn’t remember suggesting it to me. I asked the Apple master a question concerning Apple brandy and he said: “My best results for aging to date have actually been done in half gallon mason jars placed on top of a heater vent through the winter with loose fitting lids. My thermostat is never set above 70F but the temp range directly on the heater vent varies greatly throughout the winter and I feel the brandy greatly benefited from it.” I have one vent that is out of the way of traffic. Last fall I put a half gallon of apple brandy. A gallon of one year old single malt and a quart of a bourbon all at cask strength in front of the vent. Last month I bottled the single malt and it’s amazing, but the bourbon that I proofed yesterday tastes like it’s 2 or3 year old. Deep color, rich smooth and sweet creamy vanilla finish. The bourbon is only 7 months old. I know summer is coming but if you can remember to take that special brandy or whiskey next fall and put it on your heater vent for the winter I will bet you won’t be disappointed.
Thanks for that nugget of wisdom Cranky.
Cheers: JBC
