Home Distiller

Hello all,
New to distilling. I know as little or less than the next guy. I did some studying and bought some cheap equipment instead of spending a boatload of money on something I suck at or don't have the time to do. Much like my BBQ habit and reloading habit. I'm now proficient at both of the others and still am using my cheap equipment. My plan is to approach distilling in the same manner. If I can produce decent product with cheap equipment I may pull the trigger on more stuff.

I too share you other hobbies and do a lot of reloading myself.
Nothing wrong with starting out with a lower cost still to get started. Then once you've gotten a few runs under your belt and find out what types of spirit you enjoy making the most (vodka, whiskey, brandy, run, etc) you'll be in a much better position to know if you want something bigger or more fancy or if what you have works just fine.

One nice thing about this hobby is that you can build most things yourself and there is a lot of information on this forum to help you do exactly that. It's a "library" of all kinds of distilling knowledge just begging to be read.

Welcome aboard.
Yes you can get away with low cost equipment in this hobby but cheap may get you into trouble. There many things that are cheap and for a reason, in this hobby some of those might kill you, also cheap equipment might cost you more in the end.

You have come to a great place to learn and please read all the great information on this sight before you distill a drop that you or friends might drink .

My friend who got me started took the same approach.
He's been distilling in his own home made pot still for a couple years.
If you reload then you already know how important instructions and safety are.

Thanks for the warm welcome(s). I never had the opportunity to serve. By the time I was ready to do so, I was too old.

No sweat, just picked up on the common fng identifier . Best wishes for a good run. Right about expensive hobbies. Start with good, proven materials and success follows. And then you need just one more thing, or maybe two to get it perfect. Of course, that homebrew shop does so extra cool stuff...
