waiting too long to use grains and not suring up storage bin
Well,
I've been busy with getting married, buying a new house, finishing the basement, building a cabin, new baby...etc.
I didn't really think about how long I had left my grains in my Rigid 5' gang box...close to 18 months. I thought it was insect and rodent proof. NOT!
I have it in my basement in the room with the furnace. It used to be in my detached garage with no temperature control.
WEEVILS!!! EVERYWHERE! I lost 100 pounds of grain because I kept delaying making a new batch and I would have to say there were 15k weevils inside the gang box all throughout my grains! I started seeing them once it got cold out and they just pummeled my grains. I feel so stupid.
wow, super embarrassed.

Yuk! Get it cleaned as quick as possible. They’ll get into your kitchen cupboards and that’s a real mess....cereal that rustles inside the box...pancakes with spots! They’re a curse.

If you direct a blow off tube from a ferment onto the grain it we I'll asphyxiate the weevils. The also don't survive freezing. Once killed, just mill them with the grain.
Re: waiting too long to use grains and not suring up storage bin
Lol Otis! Weevils are in the grain usually so no amount of sealing will prevent them... has anyone brewed with weevil laden grains though? Is the flavor affected?

If corn has been cracked for too long, I don't care if it has weevils or mold or whatever or not, it gets fed to the local ducks.

Yeast don't seem to mind stale grains or weevils. I have only brewed once with Weevil infested grain, infestation was not huge, and I could detect no difference (other than not needed to add protein nutrients!!)

Re: waiting too long to use grains and not suring up storage bin
since posting I've used a bunch of Diatomaceaous Earth to kill them.
I had no less than 30k weevils. They are finally down to manageable numbers. I may see about 20 per week in the basement, and dwindling.
I should have taken photos but it was so disgusting I just wanted it out of the house

That’s what I used too. It took a while (months), but eventually they were eliminated. Now, I keep grains and flours in the freezer.Honest_Liberty wrote: ↑Mon Nov 25, 2019 3:44 pm...I've used a bunch of Diatomaceaous Earth to kill them.
