Puking, and Antifoaming Agents

Post by 50percent »

Hi

I have been stilling for a few years, but only with grapes and various fruits.
I decided to try my hand at whiskey, with 50 Litres of a 100% barley mash I made at a "Brew-your-own Beer facility."

As my pot still is only 36 litres, I separated my stripper runs into 2: 30 litres the 1st run, and 20 litres the 2nd run. Got through the 1st one, but had to shut down 3 times because of puking. Finally seemed to resolve the problem with about 1/2 cup of vegetable oil (actually, sunflower oil) floating in the pot, and backing off on the heat after 100 F.

My 2nd run just puked like crazy. Had to shut it down as it was even building pressure -- started leaking puke at the gasket between the lid and the riser.

So my questions are these:

1. Why does this stuff foam so bad, and what causes the foaming?
and
2. I picked up a bottle of this stuff where I brewed the wash:
FIVE STAR DEFOAMER 105
"A Concentrated Defoamer For Use In Kettles And Fermenters"
10% Food Grade Silicone Antifoam

Is this stuff safe to try in my stripper runs? The 1st 100ml of my first stripper run was only 49%ABV. (I stripped down to 10%)
Will this stuff stay in the pot, or carry over into my distillate?

Thank you in advance,
