CCVM AND DIMROTH PRODUCT CONDENSER

Post by Slow42 »

Thanks to Fivey’s persistence, understand and help I’m going to attempt to build a CCVM and Dimroth product condenser. This is based on Dad300 post. For reference Fivey could you please post picture of your unit here as this build is going to be based upon it. I will probably go 3” as the parts aren’t much more cost wise than 2”. Just lots more soldering. Any input would be helpful. have to go and buy a touch and practice soldering before I start. So plenty of time for input. I’ll post my first questions below.
Fivey wrote: Sat Jan 04, 2020 4:19 am Ok, the CCVM design can be found described here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=41579&hilit=controlled

But as a quick summary, you have a packed column with a tee on top oriented so the T is on it’s side; and a condenser coil feeding down from the open top far enough down that it passes the mouth of the side-port of the T. From the side port you have an elbow and a product condenser. You push the Top condenser coil down past the mouth of the side take-off to put the column into full reflux; you pull it up a bit to allow vapours to exit the column and escape to the product condenser.

Making it out of simple 2” tubing, you can keep the costs low by buying the bits direct from Ali express, and avoid the $ associated with a ‘distilling kit’. It is also easier to buy a bit at a time as you can afford it rather than have to swallow it all in one payment.

Use 3/8” x 72” CSST to make a quick and easy coil, low effort.

Here is an example shopping list; you can probably do better by looking for each item a bit harder than I just did:

2x 2” 500mm spool https://www.aliexpress.com/item/3282219 ... b201603_53

Copper mesh 5m https://www.aliexpress.com/item/3282513 ... 1310dTWoKZ

72” 3/8” CSST https://www.homedepot.com/p/HOME-FLEX-3 ... /204626688
You might want to get one with a gas valve to give you extra control over water flow

1x 2” tee https://www.aliexpress.com/item/3281946 ... 1af0Htg4EM

1x 2” condenser https://www.aliexpress.com/item/3282913 ... 3862BP92Wn

90 degree elbow 2” https://www.aliexpress.com/item/3283791 ... 5a0aklc1Yd

6x 2” triclamps https://www.aliexpress.com/item/3281933 ... 6f28sqrmQB

6x 2” PTFE gaskets https://www.aliexpress.com/item/3281947 ... 7256tKf7ei

You’ll also need some hosetail barb adaptors and hose clamps and some hose.

That is almost all of it... except you need an additional length of 2” spool pipe, and the exact length you want depends on your bending of the CSST. Get one of the 500mm 2” sections, bend the CSST into a coil such that it fits inside the pipe snuggly, and then measure the length of the coil as it would be within the 2” pipe, with the connectors sticking out the top. Take off that number the height of the top of the Tee down to the lower mouth of the side port. Then get a length of spool to suit, with the intent that when the CSST coil is pressed right down from the top of the Tee, you should see the coil all the way through the mouth of the side port.

Eg 1x 100mm 2” spool https://www.aliexpress.com/item/3284333 ... b201603_53

That is the simplest... for a little more $ you can see what is going on better by replacing the Tee with a cross + a viewport (and an extra pair of gasket/clamp)

1x 2” cross https://www.aliexpress.com/item/3288353 ... 1af008vYOz

1x 2” viewport https://www.aliexpress.com/item/3283883 ... 1433AQZ169

Don’t forget the extra gasket and clamp.

You should be able to get an idea of how that all goes together from the pics etc in that thread above, but let me know if you need pics and I’ll take some of mine which is like this except 3”
1. Will a 3” to 2” reducer to key be ok?
2. Could I use a cross in place of the tee so I can install a view window to see where the condenser placement is situated?
3. How long a pipe coming off the top of the tee/cross? I can get any size.
4. Coming off the tee, side, with a 90 degree elbow or should I add a short pipe to extend past the key width?
5. Second Reducer coming off 90 degree, 3” to 2”, connecting to Dimroth, does the SS pipe, keg spear, have to be 1” or is bigger better? It’s nice to use the spear but it only costs about $6.00 so I can go bigger.
6. Best length for product spear, Dimroth, over all reducer plus pipe?
Enough for now :D

The Tee is a great idea, might have to swap mine out. Runs fine without but site glasses are sexy. Your PC can de any diameter, but wider will take a longer length of CCST to coil. You want to fill the outer shell as much as possible so vapor doesn't have a chance of getting by. A few scrubbies doesn't hurt, I have them in my RC coil.

#5. I believe bigger the better for your vapor path all the way to your dimroth product condenser coil. You will get a faster production rate when you are running full out with a larger path to your product condenser. The more you reduce the greater the back pressure, which will push more vapor up to your reflux condenser. Only an issue when. You want to run fast.

I haven't got hands on experience but am gathering parts for my modular still. It will have a fair bit of ccvm in it, amongst other things.
So here's what I think of your questions, if anyone sees errors please point them out for my benefit as well ;-)

1. Yes, I believe dad300 runs this way actually.
2. I hope so, I had the same idea. Not necesary but I like eye candy as much as the next guy.
3. It needs to be long enough to hold your reflix condenser in place with the condenser fully raised, so it's dependent on your rc.
4. Doesn't matter. It can help you place your product condenser in a more comfortable or safe (eg if running on propane to keep away from burner) position. Be mindful that added lengthwill need support to carry the weight.
5 and 6. No idea, my kegs didn't have the spears anymore so I'm looking at other pcs.

Good luck with your build

a sight glass is nice and can help with monitoring, but at take-off you will just watch your coil on a ccvm. put it lower closer to the top of your packing. you will have a better view of actual reflux return and may see a fluidzised bed/boil. not that I have seen that yet...

Thanks Setsumi. I would like the site glass but I started adding up all the parts for this project and its getting quite expensive. More than I though. Those small incidental parts add up quickly.

Build modular and you can always add it later when more funds are available. Rome wasn't built in a day I'm told. :)

It took me about two years to put my CCVM together. In the meantime, I grew old and wise.

The problem with me is I’m already old and not enough time to be wise

I’m finding that 2” parts are much more plentiful than 3” and the cost is much more in 3” now that I found I won’t be able to make the parts myself. Everything must be welded and I can’t do that. I understand 3” is better than 2”.

In a 10 gallon run what would be the time factor difference, in reflux, no strip run, to complete the task in 2” vs 3”? Does that make sense?

If using a 2” copper pipe column for reflux condenser to sit on top; can the take off of the tee be 1 1/2 inches? So a tee 2” x 1 1/2” x 2”. Then reducing to 1” beer spear, from 1 1/2” elbow. Is this to small?

From what I read the smaller take-off will slow production. I used the 3x3x3 tee, then reduced it down to the 2" I needed, but I'm not sure how that affects the performance of my setup.

You definitely have to work within your means, if it were easy everyone would have the biggest and best. It helps to be crafty, as well as befriend people of certain trades: welder, electrician, plumber (I know one of each :D ) this is a hobby that takes time, a lot of time.

My opinion is to build what you can to be the most efficient as possible, my other opinion is a 3" column is better suited to a 10 gallon still charge. so far I have had 8-10 hr still times refluxing low wines (but it is a new still, and I am learning). You wouldn't put a medium sized glove on a large size hand, just as you wouldn't want an XL glove on the same hand. With a two inch setup I imagine those times would have been increased significantly.

Anyway, I apologize for the mostly anecdotal opinions

Thanks for the input both anecdotal and helpful no so boring :D I’m almost there with my parts just a bit more tweaking and advise. Looks like it’s going to be 3” column to 2” sight glass and everything else 2”. Got the calculator out :D

These reducers being tapered won't cause as much turbulence.

Turbulence between boiler and column and turbulence in condensers can be good. One of functions of packing is turbulence.

Depending where, turbulence can be good thing.

I'd have no problem with one of those near the boiler for the 2" to 3" connection but would use a tapered adapter connecting a 3" column to a 2" reflux condenser. That was really what I was getting at.
