Fresh Aussie Distiller - introducing myself :)

Post by tomcat_ginstill »

Hey all,

I'm a 23 years old bartender by trade from Western Australia & with the time sitting at home during Covid-19 it came to me that my next move would be distillation. Working in Hospitality since 14 years of age I've always been on the look for a good prospect for my own business some day.

Food is highly perishable, chefs are fickle, profit margins aren't great & the restaurant business has a huge failure rate - so my interest peaked pretty quickly towards alcohol service. Now having developed into quite an avid drinker & working as a cocktail slinger in some cool little dive bars, alcohol is my world. Building a backyard set-up & self-learning extensively is really just the first step, but still the most important.

For the first couple months of my distillation journey I just treated it as going to uni/study. Bought myself a big fat notebook & designated daily 4 hours study sessions. Just reading & reading. Nothing being made. It has been 4 months since then & my C.C.V.M. set up is all cut to size still waiting to be assembled. I keep learning so much, at each point understanding there is so much I am yet to know.

I want to do everything right. At each step when something needs to be done & I don't know how to solder or how to beat copper or how to braise I am teaching myself instead of finding ways around it. I want to have all the skills to make everything. I am young, with nothing else in my life but this. Nothing but time to study this, the way I see it I am embarking on a degree in distillation.

I am a completely broke guy, living with my best mates in a city house working in my little shed with big dreams of making something myself I can be proud to pour for someone.
------------------------------------

The future:
/I am enrolled to start a 6month Heavy Fabrication Certificate at the end of June.
Designed as a Boilermaking Pre-apprenticeship it teaches welding skills and working with stainless steal.
/My bestfriend(Balin) is approaching his final year in engineering & finance with a special interest in fluid engineering.
/My bestfriend(Alex) has been working in advertising & radio now moving to Melbourne, where they offer a distillation degree.
With myself & Balin diving into distillation Alex thinks he'll jump on board too.
/My folkes have just bought a farm down south in the winery & fruit rich region. A great potential location for distillation in future.
/I'm hunting down the few local distilleries and hassling them day in day out to let me do some free work at their places. As of yet no bites.
/This is a long term thing. Myself, Balin & Alex all want to travel extensively & live our lives but this seems like a skill/trade we can build until some day we will have our very own thing together.
-----------------------------------

Anyways, welcome all to my pipe-dream^.
I may have big ambitions, but things are real simple atm I just want to geek out & absorb all I can thoroughly.
If I am wrong in any way at any points & you feel like bullying me about it, please do. I encourage you.

& so far I have been absolutely blown away by the knowledge & effort provided by the Homedistiller community.
There really has been no other source coming any where close to as informative.

Thanks all for having me ^-^

Please contact me any time, I appreciate advice & guidance immensely.
