Enquiring minds want to know.

Post by Drexall »

Hey there,

Been brewing about 20 years, started making gin recently and someone asked me to have a go at rum.

"Sure" I said "how hard can it be" I said.

A few days later and a lot of YouTube later, "Oh dear lord" I said.

Learning a lot but got a long way to go.

I did rum first and it came out great!

I had to hide my last gallon so I can see what it's like with some age on it.

I like it so much I've been drinking it too fast.

Pick a tried and true rum recipe and you'll be happy.

Welcome!

Forget YouTube learning, as we will not be able to assist us if you run into some problems, cause the recipe will be unknown.. best to try one from the True & Tried section..

+1 my exact thoughts while reading your post. Rum is not that hard!

Forget Youtube for almost anything distilling related.
Mostly you will learn misleading rubbish.

Even white sugar shine is technically a "light rum", though for flavor you'd want some added panela and/or blackstrap molasses, also beware of foamy oils.

Researching "dunder pits" can be scary, but otherwise have no fear of rum.

Guessing you've read Bucaneer Bob's thread?

I successfully made my first rums long before Youtube and forums existed and I've never watched Youtubes about rum that weren't put up by commercial manufacturers.
Rum is only as complicated as you want it to be, so start simple and only let it evolve into complicated protocols if that takes your fancy.
