Safe to shalack the crackly end of a coon pecker?
What would be a good preserving/stabilizing coating to protect the brittle end of a coon pecker? I imagine heads would strip off a lot of coatings. It wouldn't be good to get dissolved chemicals in the end product.

High ABV ethanol (not just heads) are not a good mix with shellac into your product. Do you find degradation of your coon pecker under normal use?

People really use coon dicks? I thought that was just shit they made up on that TV show. ![Eh :eh:](./images/smilies/icon_eh.gif)

Re: Safe to shalack the crackly end of a coon pecker?
The ones bought online seem to come with an already degraded straight end. Almost as if they were weathered by the elements/sun. A guy just purchased a new one. He's hoping its of better quality. Time will tell.

Just a colloquialism. Can use other materials to accomplish the same thing.Deplorable wrote: ↑Mon Aug 31, 2020 7:59 am People really use coon dicks? I thought that was just shit they made up on that TV show.![]()

I’ve used a bent twig I picked up under my oak tree for a couple years now.

I would think it's best to just extend the outlet of your product condenser or parrot to where you want/need it to be.
If you really want a coon pecker why not just use a piece of solid copper wire with a bend in it to hold it in place

Re: Safe to shalack the crackly end of a coon pecker?
Sometimes a stainless steel funnel can be used on top of the collection jug when running stripping runs to help collect an unruly stream. On spirit runs, I've used toothpicks, twig with bark stripped off, and even a small PTFE tube to help depending on where and how I set up. But most of the time I am able to get the PC to line up with collection jar just fine.
But as others have said, putting coat of sealer on it is not a good idea. It will end up in your product. I'd avoid anything not SS, Copper, PTFE, or wood. Glass would not react with the alcohol, but you don't want to risk a chip of glass in your product.

The whole idea is a terrible. You don't need or want to emulate a stupid TV show; at best it does nothing for you, at worst you're needlessly fucking up your product.
As others have suggested, stick to materials on the approved list; a twist of copper will work fine.

Yeah that folkloric gadgetry is akin to thinking a decal from the speed shop placed under your hood is gonna make your hotrod run faster.Expat wrote: ↑Mon Aug 31, 2020 9:45 amThe whole idea is a terrible. Twist up a couple copper wires and call it a coon's dick, problem solved. Even better prolly. Copper wire can be shaped.

I don’t think the coon would be too happy about it!!

I think the problem is that you're using old used coon dicks. If it's fresh you won't run into this degradation problem for a while. Maybe find one from a less frisky coon as well.

The racoon baculum is the wrong tool, but George sells them bundled with his PID controller. A Gorilla baculum is more robust for our needs, (but that would belong on the liars bench!)

I used to use a copper wire or stick
Oddly enough i found it in a coons foreskin.

My collection jar is a bit further away than that. Perhaps there's a larger mammals penis I could use?

Re: Safe to shalack the crackly end of a coon pecker?
What you need is one of these Seabass......a Roo Pecker.
Australian Moonshiners have used these since the days of the great depression when they couldn't afford enough copper to reach the collection Jar.
Back then no one had thought to move the jar closer to the still.
The ends of these things don't go crackly when used with high abv spirit.
Im still using the same one my Great Grandfather handed down.
If you watch the Vid you will see that they are also fully adjustable, which makes it easy to get the booze to dibble into the jar the way you like.

Re: Safe to shalack the crackly end of a coon pecker?
An observation, on a recent cleaning run on a newly build condenser I used a strip of paper towel twisted into a string to help direct my drips into the jar (it was disposed of cuz cleaning run but I didn't want flammible dribbles on the ground) and afterwords I realized that the alcohol wasn't running down the paper but actually moving "through" the paper by capillary action, and in the process visible deposited a bunch of black smudge onto the paper, presumably machine grease from the new copper tubing,
Interesting
Would paper like this be safe to contact drinkable likker?

Many of us filter fruit macerations with paper towels. Cheaper and faster than cofee filters.

Is this a real HD thread or the closed captioning from a moonshine video on TikTok?
