The picture attached is of a concentric 2" vapor throat tube lower end built. showing that the reducer for 2" built with a 1.25" with tube extending down about 3/8" with notches.. the lower end serve two purpose, one as a pressure builder in the column, and 2 as a centering ring for returning distillate at the top of the packing and the notches assist the breaking up the distillate..

Re: Centering Rings
I plan on using lots of centering rings in my next build - about one every 15cm. I'll be cooling the column walls to induce reflux on them mid column so will need a lot to push the reflux back into the packing.

These are 75mm diameter sink strainers that I have cut a wedge out of to match the circumference of my 60mm internal column wall diameter. I plan on sliding these down the column - one ring between each two s/s scrubbers. They should hold in place just by the spring action against the wall.
I've drilled out the centre to 8mm but I'll probably cut a lot more out of the centre to leave a 30mm internal hole so that reflux doesn't just go in a stream down the centre of the column. With a smaller hole (or no hole) they might even act like bubble plates. I might check out that as a possibility.

Re: Centering Rings
I haven't experimented with centering rings.
I have played with different ways to get a reflux condenser to piss in the middle of the packing
Seems to me, centering rings would cause a bottle neck to the rising vapor and downward reflux.
And degrade the performance of the column.
Re: Centering Rings
when i insert my rolled up copper mesh, i form a gentle conical effect with my thumb.
because i don't have x-ray vision, i do not have a clue if this helps.
but judging from the gunk spread evenly throughout through the roll, it might.
or i might be wasting my time

That was always my thinking too Shady.shadylane wrote: ↑Mon Feb 01, 2021 10:11 pmI haven't experimented with centering rings.

Just that I got a guy that has plenty, plenty of column height
struggling to get to 95.

Re: Centering Rings
What's he using for packing and is it properly sized for the column ?

Re: Centering Rings
Well he has transitioned to SPP. But was using scrubber material in a 4" diameter x 10' tall.
He has some other variables that need to be worked out one issue at a time.
He needs a stable cooling source.
He needs to have better control of his heat input.
I haven't had any recent updates.
