1st run: Moonshine

Post by wwjones2794 »

Hello , My username is wwjones2794. I live in Eastern Oklahoma, but im from N.W. Arkansas. My ancestors came from Kentucky, North Carolina, and before that wales. I cant prove it, but i feel making moonshine, beer, etc is in my blood. Im 58, and fixing to make my first batch of moonshine.

Welcome. Moonshine is in a lot of our blood, but that's got to do with consumption rather than ancestry!

Hello and welcome to HD. Making your own likker will spoil you. If you do a good ferment, keep happy yeast, strip then spirit run, and make good cuts, you'll end up with a better tasting white product than what you can buy for a reasonable price. And then if you give it a little age and flavoring (oak, fruit, etc...) youll be surprised at how much better it is than top shelf store bought.
A lot more to it than that, but do the reading, it will help more than you realize.
JMHO. Have fun and be safe.

First run was a sugar wash. It finished all combined 130 proof. It was just a little hot, going down and hitting bottom.

This time I'm trying a bigger ferment for a15 gal cook.
I got 40 lbs cracked corn, 10 lbs. Of 2-row barley, And 40 lbs white sugar.. I been trying to calculate og. But can't come up what sounds right. Any advice?

At 2lbs per gal you'll get roughly 12% . Thats a gravity of around 1.09. not counting the corn and 2 row. quite high depending on the yeast you use. I use baker's so keep my wash around 1.07.
I drink so much now,on the back of my license it's a list of organs I need.

Check out the calculators on the home site. There is a great one for sugar based washes. Or follow one of the tried and true recipes. (UJSSM is a great starting point)
For an all grain mash most tend to recommend upto 2lbs/gal of grain. For a sugar wash 1.060-1.070 seems to be the average recommended range.

Given the stuff you have, Jimbo's 1/2 Barrel Wheated bourbon and gumball head seems like a good go, just sub out the wheat for your barley.
