First vodka run

Many like to post about a first successful ferment (or first all grain mash), or first still built/bought or first good run of the still. Tell us about all of these great times here.
Pics are VERY welcome, we drool over pretty copper 8)

First vodka run

Post by ismbardbrunel123 »

I have just completed my first vodka run, when measuring at the Heads, it was over 96%.....my head temps stayed at 76.5 all the way through, when i poured it all in a steel pan, the overall % came up at 91%....this was a first distillation, but i believe it self distills many times over whilst in equilibrium?, so so i still need to distill it again... or is it down to personal taste ?...it's for my partner and as i don't drink vodka, i would'nt know what to expect when tasting...thanks....

When you say you made 96%, were you using a high precision Hydrometer and temperature correcting? Especially around azeo, it’s easy to have uncorrected reading higher than actual proof.

If you are running a column which you have to be to get that high a proof, you performed multiple distillations already. The question to you is, do you like it and is it clean enough for you? If not, then dilute to 40% and run it again. If it is, then make cuts, filter if you like and blend to 40% for drinking.

Legally it would not be vodka, but this is home distiller. Do what you like.

Thank you for answering, when using my 100ml measuring jar, my Stevenson hydrometer bottomed out, so i have a smaller set of chinese hydrometers and used the one in the 40 to 100 range....not really too important for me as long as i know i was in the ballpark. With it being my first run, i just wanted to know how much on target i was.....the temp was 12c as i use a 3ft quarter inch tube coming from the column....so am pretty happy that it sounds like i was doing things the right way..
As i said, it's for my other half, i don't know what vodka tastes like, suppose i'll try her with a sample...thanks ever so much for your help....
