is nickel going to give of flavors or poison my distilate....75% of the 5 cent piece in the US is copper but the other 25% is nickel.

I'd tend to go for copper. You don't need much and if you made your own still you're sure to have some bits of scrap lying about.

i got about 10 feet of extra 3/8 tube....think i could just tin snip it up and pour the stuff in?

You'll only need 6 or 8 small pieces, not 10 ft.

I just throw in a few (5 or 6) one inch pieces of scrap 3/8" copper tubing. I used to use a few river pebbles but the copper pieces are quieter.

Nickle wont be a problem, its one of the main ingrediants in Stainless Steel that give it its anti corosion properties..

But i would still use plain copper as the nickel would have hardend it and made it a bit more chemical resistant.
and i would put as much copper as i can in the coulmn..

Yes, mate, snip it all up and stick it in there if you have no copper. Best thing to use is the copper mesh from Amphora society.
