So this is a question brought on by good fortune.
I have a about a full stick of 2” copper pipe, type L. I’m building a new pot still/thumper to dedicate just for product runs. My standard way of doing things is a 4-6” weld on ferrule on top of half barrel kegs. My plan is to beat out a plate from some 3”, type K, I have on hand. Cut it down to 6” OD to fit as a cap in my ferrule. Drill it and braze in a down tube and vent.
Do I bend a back to back 90 in my column and go right into the thumper with the 2” and save buying the fittings for reducing the size of the pipe at the top of the column?
I would braze a cap on the bottom of the down tube and drill it with multiple rows of 1/8” holes to diffuse better. The top of the cap will have very short stubs of pipe with brazed on ferrules. I like modular easy to clean pieces. Is 2” too much? Will I have to insulate the 2” unlike the 1” I use now? will it overpower my thumper?
