HETP for lava rock

Hi there,
I extended my 2" CCVM ss scrubber packed column to 1.6 m but I still can't reach azeotrope of 97.2% ABV. Despite the extension, I take between 95 and then 94% over the entire run of the hearts, yet. Seems no difference between 1.3 and 1.6 m.
I know, many of you would say to buy SPP but it's quite expensive.
I want to give a try to lava rock.
Those of you who tried both scrubbers and lava rock, which one is more efficient and which is less prone to flooding?
I tried once to insulate the column but the result was worse. There was one of the lowest ABV reached, couldn't believe it. I don't understand why.
Another question, what's your reflux rate you normaly use and how much do you increase the RR to reach the azeotrope?
