subject: Need advice on flavoring

Hi i am distilling a rum from a molasses/brown sugar mix and don't really have the resources to acquire charred oak chips for flavor or color so is there anything that can be used to help color the alcohol and give it some flavors I.E. cinamon sticks or anyother kind of spices

Oak is prety traditional with rum. Vanilla beans (or vanilla extract), cinnamon sticks (or ground cinnamon) are also traditional additions to rum.

I would include oak if possible. White or red oak.

4 or 5 dollars will get ya enough oak ot last a few years. Buy an oak board or plank at a carpentry supply shop or a builders supply store and use a plane on it.

I never liked toasted oak...I allways use virgin oak on most everythin'. A half ounce to an ounce of oak shavin's per half gallon rum or whiskey, and a few months of age make for a tastier drink.

I wish ya luck :-)

i have used vanilla pods which were great. some use caramelised sugar for colour and a bit of smoothness. i got oak from an oak tree, have a look around your area.
