First time poster, long time lurker. Love this site.
Anyway, I thought i would make it known to my Australian brothers, that if this "Internet Filter" than Senator Conroy is trying to shove through becomes a reality, this site and others related to our hobby of distilling will be banned as it will be deemed "illegal content".
Real useful huh.

Do you really think it will get through or will the "civil liberty greenies" calm things down.
Hope this is general info subject and not considered political.
Cheers.

I'm pretty sure it can't be done (or rather, can't be done economically). The way I see it, and I'm more than likely wrong, is that all data packets will need to come through a single point of entry (or perhaps they will create several access points) and then analyse every one and zero that comes through the door. How much would that reduce the speed in which we access the net, we are already being embarrassed by our archaic network when compared to other nations! Plus, Kevin07 promised us faster porn downloads in his campaign (not quite, but that's what I took from it! ;D), slowing up the net will go against all that has been promised.

The ISPs will be legally required to run the filtering software with the government blacklist. The people adding to the blacklist, at this point, have no oversight. Pretty much all that is known in regards to the blacklists is that "if its illegal in australia, it will be banned", there is a few other points, but its basically fairly open for abuse by any person or group with decent political clout.
So, its not a single point, it will be filtered at ISP level. No Opt-out. The last tests showed speeds could be slowed by as much as 80%, and yes, this does seem strange considering the National Broadband upgrade, which is being reconsidered due to the economic downturn, heh.

This actually makes me fairly angry, the way its just being shoved through, the fact this senator said that anyone who opposes it is pro-child abuse. We arn't China, and im disappointed in our government, even more if so it goes through.

My God...that's one long arse thread! I don't have time to go through it all right now, what is the general consensus on proxy's. Perhaps something like
Circumventor? I guess they will just blacklist sites like those. I think there will be ways around it, although I'm certain it won't come to that.

My kids say that their friends get around their school's censorship system by a little thing called
Ultrasurf. Apparently it even gets around the firewall that China has in place.

Ain't tried it, just heard about it and put a link up to the first result from Google.
I have no reason for proxy servers, myself. Big brother has better things to do than to go after a small guy like me.

National TV breakfast show had a phone poll this morning about it.
Didn't catch the final figures but last I saw was roughly in favour 20%, against 80%.
Lets see how much push it gets now.
Cheers.

Distilation of alcohol is legal in australia as long as its for personal use and the still dosent exceed 5 Litres.
therefore all informational material related to the subject would be legal.
as far as censorship goes they cant ban or block pirated music or porn let alone anything else.

Wrong. You can own a still with a boiler not exceeding 5 litres in capacity, but you definitely cannot distil alcohol in it without a licence, even for personal use. The government could very easily 'censor' this site under their proposed plan.
