Hi All,

I have finnished distilling and have stored the distillate (approx 60% alc) in 2L plastic coke bottles. Will there be any leaching of any nasties into the alcohol?

Thanks for any and all input

I would store it in GLASS ONLY.
plastic soda bottles are not made to stand up to alcohol.

Yes--throw it out. See the many posts-all over the site-about plastic.

According to Whisky Technology, Production and Marketing There was a study study done on the effect of PET plastic leaching into high proof ethanol. Supposedly after about a year, there were sup-micro gram per liter concentrations of the plastic in the ethanol. Whether or not that level is detectable by human senses is not mentioned.

Thank you for your answers. I should have known better..

Would redistilling it help get out the nasties or should I just throw out that batch?

If it hasn't been in long, I'd go ahead and drink it (if it tastes good). Most everything in whisky will kill you, but the ethanol will get you first!

I agree with The Chemist. If it's only been there a little while and it tastes OK, just put it in glass and don't worry about it.

I forgot to mention, its a neutral alcohol. Not a flavored spirit, if that helps anyway..

You might be ok since it doesn't sound like it was really high proof--transfer it to glass and cut open the bottle and take a look at the plastic--if it's brittled or discolored you probably lost but if it looks the same you'll prbably be fine
