Hi, thank you for this, but recently I have been reading we should be aiming for a weaker 10-12%ABV, or does that just relate to All Grain Mashes?

It is a calculator. You can enter the batch size you want and it will calculate the recipe based on the volume you enter as well at the % ABV. Yes, it is recommended to be around 10% or so.

You are reading the right things , steer clear of any advice that tells you that higher is good.
Keep to those sorts of ABVs for sugar washes , most AGs end up even lower.

Hi Saltbush, thanks for confirming that. But this is a Sugar Wash thread and I intend to produce a sugar wash for my first attempt.
And so, when you say keep those sorts of ABV's to Sugar washes, I am just a little confused as to weather you are approving 20%ABV for my sugar wash or telling me that I would still end up with a better end product by washing to a lower ABV.
I think I understand that for AG mashes and I guess all mashes (not washes) you are being perfectly clear that I should aim lower ABV's

Keep your sugar washes low as well (~10% ABV is fine). The higher the abv, the more you stress the yeast (high abv = high osmotic pressure at pitching time = unhappy, sickly yeast), the more additional "flavours" you get.

Check out the calculators
on this site too. There are basic sugar calculations there. The one shared in this topic has additional calculations that many other calculators do not.
10% isn't written in stone for a sugar wash. Even 8% is fine.

No sweat man. At the top of any page here, you'll see 'Parent Site'. Click that and it will take you to that page with LOTS of info.
