Water seal system

Has anyone experience of using a water sealed connection on a still? They are shown on some of the alembics and I am curious how they work in practice. What depth of water do you need in the seal? I am assuming it works like a fermentation airlock but that you will get no vapour leakage as it is easier for the vapour to go out via the condenser instead of overcoming the weight of the water. I imagine you would need to keep topping the seal area up as it will tend to evaporate away. If practical this could be easy enough to incorporate into a home build.
